Downtown Tucson

Here I am positively WALLOWING in a depression and Beth keeps dragging me out and making me enjoy myself, dammit! I LOVE Tucson, have I mentioned that before? The city itself is clean, colorful, well maintained and yet within minutes you can be out in the wilds with no city in sight. This was the Visitors Center. It was in a plaza with many cafes with outdoor eating areas, trees, flowers, birds and brown squirrels which are different from any we've seen before. No pics yet though.

There are Plazas all over where you are encouraged to set a spell. Fountains, statues, venders with food and crafts.

There were Murals, both painted and tiled.

This is Pima County Courthouse with a tiled mosaic dome

A view from the back, the pillars are actually a fountain, but I don't think you can see the water

These adobe row houses were built in the late 1800's. One of the oldest parts of Tucson. They were painted with different color-saturated paints.
Image

When we went behind one of them to check out the courtyards we found these trees. The fruit is the size of a very large grapefruit, but they were very light, and really didn't have a grapefruity smell. Could have been though.
Image

St. Augustine Catholic Cathedral, built in 1896. It was undergoing renovations so we couldn't go in.
Image

In the courtyard was this colorful metal flowered arch over a stage. It didn't say what it was used for, but a priest at one time started what became a world famous Mariachi Band, and they still play, so maybe this is what it is used for?
Image

Lastly, The Wishing Shrine. In the late 1800's a husband killed his wife's lover and the priests would not allow the body to buried in the concecrated cemetary, so the local people lit candles to pray for the mans soul on this spot. Now this is Prime Real Estate, amd it's still here!

Thanks for such beautiful pics of Tuson, Sparkle. Do you know if the horse and rider statue is any one in particular or just a random piece of art?

Just a cowboy. There were statues representing people, but also this type.
Do you all remember Cliff from Cheers? Well here's a little known fact....there is a basaltic peak in Tucson and the O'odam name for it is Chuk Shon, meaning "at the black base" Chuk Shon was the source of the name Tucson. Beth really wanted to go and see this peak, but I was driving and told her if she'd seen one peak she'd seen them all! She's still talking to me!

Check out the pictures of me and of Marcie and Jim by that flowered arch at the cathedral. We were geocaching around town. Oh, and then there's one of the gorgeous sunsets two weeks ago.

lovely pictures, and some are familiar when I went with my sister, how cool is that.
The one with the archway that says ATO on the top, little square of shops we went
in and shopped all the shops. My sister and hubby left some money there, bought
some pottery and some jewerly. We had also went to the art museum at the university.

Thank you, Vickie, exactly what I've been telling her. But she's out of it now - thank God - was thinking I was gonna have to hit her upside the head. I just kept dragging her along and FORCING her to enjoy herself.

And I've got this on my blog also - with some pics Sparkle doesn't have here - including our campfire last night. Now, SHE has the pics of US at the campfire - so WHERE ARE THEY, Sparkle???

I absolutely love Tuscon and the whole surrounding area including Casa Grande and Tombstone and all areas in between. Don't know if you're into airplanes or not, but the Pima Air Museum is one of the best I've ever been to. DH and I seriously thought about buying property in the area for retirement, but at the time we were really into boating and there's not really any where close to do that. Glad you're enjoying it. I'll be there in Feb for the Florence Prison Run, a motorcycle rally hosted by the Hell's Angels.
