Okay Girls I need your help. They are planning a retirement party for me on Aug 31 and are asking for gift ideas. What do I tell them? Ideas??? I've said gift cards, gas cards, nothing heavy and no knick-knacks. I've been buying stuff for so long in prep for the road I never thought that some of this stuff could have been saved for gift ideas so what do I do?

Any help will be appreciated.

Oh for those of you who don't know, I'll be going full time after I retire on Sept 1 so yes, I'm very excited and can't wait to load 'em up and head out.

How about a digital camera? Depending on what they want to spend, pooling the money or individual gifts, etc. I have two digital cameras a Cannon for what I consider safe places, :? , and a Olympus that's waterproof, drop proof and dirt proof, for those not so safe places (even rain, dusty areas) that I would worry about using my good camera (or have Hommie drop  ).

How about a mini camcorder? Walmart gift cards ... can buy supplies, and groceries all over the country.

Oh great ideas! Carol, like the book idea. Camcorder, hum? Vickie, good idea about the 2nd camera. Guess there was a reason I haven't gotten rid of my old one.

Keep 'em coming. ;)

For group gifts----Pressure-Pro tire monitoring device, backup camera, window awnings. Of course, you may already have all these expensive things! They are on my list of things to get, but are so expensive!

I love gift cards, especially a Visa gift card because it can be used anywhere. So if they bought you a Visa gift card, you could use it to buy any of those expensive items like Pressure Pro or the exact camera that you want, etc.

Just a quick 'heads up', on gift cards. I always ask and read fine print as some cards expire or may have hidden charges programmed in them.

I was just going to say that to be careful with gift cards expecially visa........my mom gave us one our first Christmas on the road and used only about half of it before it was used up by fees if you get a gift card use it totally the first time you use it....
as to ideas do you have a lap top? that might be one that money pulled together could help you get one
not sure what you drive but look around and see what you need and suggest it like the camera ideas as well
even some games to play with new friends that you meet up with....

Walmart gift cards - good anywhere and I think, no fees. Most digital camers these days also take short videos.

I do have a laptop. Pressure pro sounds great as does a brake buddy. See, brainstorming works wonders. Keep 'em comin'.

I bought my brake buddy on Ebay for about half the cost of a new one. Love it and easy to use. Since you retire 9/1 think about coming to Kerrville and maybe caravaning to Port Lavaca for a week or so.

And you could stop at The Blue Marlin Resort in NW TN for a couple of days! :)

Carolyn, you've gotten some good suggestions here. A Wal-Mart gift card sounds the best to me since Wally World seems to get most of our money. In thinking back to my going away gifts, here are some of the items I received (mine wasn't a big retirement party, just gifts when I quit my job to do a little traveling/camping). We've used every one of them too. A weather radio, a really nice thermos (we both like our coffee as we leave the campground in the morning), a new Atlas, a light-weight backpack for short hikes, and a bottle of wine (one of my favorite gifts for any occasion, ha ha).

Hey, how about a Cracker Barrel gift card - we need to do breakfast before you leave!
