Job interview on the horizon

Postby avalen » Fri Jun 12, 2009 5:27 pm

well I got a callback on a job application, not the one I really wanted but
you never know, it could open up new horizons for me. Wednesday, 3:30
and they want two recommendations from previous employers (crap) and
4 from friends, not a problem there. I can't imagine asking my supervisor
at work for a job recommendation. But it will have to happen and I'll just
tell her its for part time after hours. She knows I have to find something,
and many of the drivers at work have part time jobs.
Ok, so the job is for a caregiver, something I've never done, other than
babysit my grandsons but I guess a senior isn't that much different than
a 4 year old. Its for non medical elderly, and I'm really scared. I'll be out
of my comfort zone :? :o

I hope that it works out for you. You might actually enjoy helping them and what a wonderful gift (although being paid) to help someone who needs assistance.

Do you know the mental and physical capabilities of the patient?

it varies from each assignment, but I did request the non medical division cause
I'm not a nurse. They have assignments where elderly need help to do their shopping,
minor housework, laundry, errands, doctor appointments etc. I'm scared to death but
mostly I'm scared of it cause its a new thing, I've been a driver for 20 years and thats
all I know really. Even the thought of the interview is scaring me! :o

You might be more comfortable if you think about the senior. Probably no longer has a driver's license and so is really dependent on other's kindness and probably feels helpless. Maybe her "family" has no time to drive her around and so she/he is housebound. Just think how hard this would be if you had been a capable person used to taking care of yourself and now you're completely dependent on others. I don't think I could handle that. When I'm home in Kerrville I volunteer for Meals on Wheels and also to drive senior's shopping, etc.

Common sense, sense of humor, a sense of connecting to another person and an awareness of safety concerns....can take you a long way. As a driver with children you probably already have a fine sense of noticing details and small changes that help you predict issues.... I bet you are better at this than you think.

Oh, Ava, you'll do great, both in the interview and with the consumer. I can tell you are a caring person, very tuned in to others around you. Good Luck!

Ava!

What's this "driving is all I know" stuff? Honey,... you are a wonderful, caring, friendly, helpful, woman. That's what WE know about you, so all you have to do is be yourself and you will do fine. Probably it's people whose kids are all grown and moved to other parts of the country, and they need help. Good luck, I'm sure you will do perfectly!

It's got to be easier then being confined in a bus with a load of kids!! Just keep in mind some of us "older codgers" get cranky sometimes.
You'll do great.

Being out of our comfort zones isthe only way learn and expand our horizons! Look at how we did when we learned to walk! We left our comfort zones of sitting down and mom's lap and headed out! You can do it...you are adventurous at heart, and will really enjoy the challenges, I can feel it. As others have said, anyone who can drive a schoolbus can do just about ANYTHING put in front of them! I, too, am nervous about my new position in the school next year, but I am going to look at it as a new adventure in my life and a way of getting out of what could become a comfortable rut!

Keep us informed, and don't give up with just one interview, either! The jobs market is very slim at this time, and many people have been to tons of interviews and submitted oodles of resumes. You are capable of way more than you think you are!
Life is about learning to dance in the rain
Happy travels!

I ditto what everyone else has said. Why, in just a short while, I'll bet you'll wonder why you had concerns in the first place!
You'll do just fine.
