Sourdough Well, N. Rim Grand Canyon

I discovered yesterday that our Internet at the Lodge has been throttled down by the company. Hence Echo's and my problems posting. So I'm sitting at the lunch counter in a grocery at Kanab using my AirCard. I'm waiting for my truck to get fixed. It was shuddering when I braked or when the road was rough. Beth knows the struggle I sometimes had. It turned out to be the Ball Joints and something else. A $700 bill. Good thing I'm working!. Anyway, last week I took another hike. Sourdough Well sounded neat. Two miles out and two back. I could do that. I thought there might be signs of an an old homestead there.
The walk started across a broad meadow.
Image

The first thing I saw were these weird twisted Aspens. No sign of why they are shaped like that.

Some rocks with lime green lichen, and grey furry lichen. (Aren't you just facinated with all this)
Image

Then some rocks which must be volcanic in origin. These holes are formed by gas bubbles.
Image

The meadow narrowed down into a valley. It was a lovely day. Birds that rarely saw humans were singing and fluttering around.
Image

Finally I saw the sign for Sourdough Well.
Image

What a disapointment!

However there were some sink holes nearby. I'm sure the deer frequent here.
Image

So that was 2 miles, but I was enjoying it and decided to continue a little further on. I found a whole area with fossilised shells and coral. I never cease to be amazed at finding shells at 9000ft. Even though I know the principle behind it.

 I'm kinda like you, Sparkle, they could've at least put a fake wishing well, or something there, lol. But the rest of your pics are beautiful, thanks for sharing them with us. I thought the fossils were neat.

I'm sitting here laughing at the well. But you got a good hike in and the rest was great. So, it was worthwhile even if the well was a let down.

Did you ever find an explanation for the name? At least you got a nice walk and were able to share it with us!

awww all that walking and just a pile of cement. was it a real well that was filled in for safety's sake? perhaps it WAS a homestead at one time?

I Googled Sourdough Well, and many sites came up, but no info. I went for a walk today, one of my days off and found a deer skull and then a cow skull. Of course I hauled them home, carrying them for three miles. Do you know a cow skull is HEAVY!!!!

And what, pray tell, will you do with them now that you have them home?

Why, Bedazzle them, of course! No reason they shouldn't sparkle too

But I really want to know about the trees, what made them like that?

Glad to hear that you are getting to enjoy your spare time - That has got to be a beautiful area to walk in.
Love the picture of the Well - what a surprise.

Sparkle, here's another good walk on the same trail. It's across the highway from the lodge, Road #611. I used to camp down that road - view of the East Rim. I'm not sure where the trail ends, but just followed it until I got tired. Beautiful hike - very easy. Ignore the arrows on the sign - I turned left.
