My new favorite food is squash blossoms. Sorry, this isn't a recipe......just some snap shots of the process....

First, the stems are snapped off, then the flowers are rinsed.....

A pepper is roasted....

The veges are chopped...

Then sauteed.....

And finally, served with black beans and fresh corn tortillas from el mercardo.....

This is something new to me, Squash Blossoms, never heard of eating them. How did someone figure this out that it was good to eat, were they too impatient to wait for the squash,,,, was it a new wife, just moved from the city and planted her first garden and thought, wow, I'll surprise my husband and cook him some of these pretty squash thingys. Reminds me of a boss I had once, she was a city girl, through and through and married and went to her husband's family farm, took the tour and saw all the animals and then asked to see the bush hog, thinking it was an animal, too,

But, seriously, I have never heard of this. I can just about imagine my Mom whipping my little butt if she would have ever caught me picking off the pretty blossoms from her garden  , course, I never liked vegies then and would have probably destroyed them, not ate them!

Vickie... I know it some times sounds strange..but in many cultures as in my own Italian.. that was a very tasty meal.. we called fiori di zucchini fritti. Yep in simple terms the Flower of the Zucchini fried :) My mother didn't waste any part of a veggie.. (just about) and she'd only do the Summer Blossoms as the Winter ones were too bitter.. and get this only the Male ..yes, there is a Male and Female ..LOL but she would either make a batter up and fry them or she stuffed them with Cheese and Herbs and dipped them in egg, flour and breadcrumbs.. boy they were good.. Now here's another loop for ya.. She'd only use the night blossoms..I think it had to do with something of how the flower was..not too sure.. will ask my oldest brother.. but they taste like the zucchini..sorta.. but are very good.. LOL See come in and check us all out and read and you'll be amazed of what a neat group of women we are ..we're always sharing and learning something interesting...LOL

Oh, in fact there are many flowers you can eat.. yep, went to a big to do.. and they had these gorgeous pansies on the plates .. looks so pretty.. and they were part of the salad..LOL ... My brother still cooks Dandelions..makes great wine too.. but boy they can be bitter.. kind of like in the south the turnip greens.. when I cook for my hubby I mix mustard and turnip greens together...(he's from Mississippi)

Ok.. my segment added LOL

Diana you did good ...great cooking segment..

God Bless
Zeee...(PS... maybe that's how I got the name Zeee...liking blossoms..)

Thanks Zeee for the added info and the family stories, my Italian grandparents didn't cook the blossoms, interesting too about the night blossoms.

Thanks Zeee, now I know more, if I can just remember it. Male & female, huh, maybe that explains why some blooms produce the vegie and some don't :?: I'd probably pick the wrong one, thinking the little squash was the male

Diana that meal looked wonderful! Loved VickieP's story about the Bush Hog!

Little kids who visit the farms on school tours around here want to know if chocolate milk comes from brown cows.
