Here we are at St. Mary’s cg at Glacier NP. Left to right: Ron, Beth, Bob, Carol, Liz

Image

An evening view of from our campsite.

Image

We put the men right to work duct-taping my vent hood back on after it blew off and broke in high winds. I’m going to try to get it replaced in Calgary. Miss my Fantastic Fan.

Image

Me at St. Mary’s Lake. If I’d get out of the way, you could see more of the snow-covered mountains.

Image

Little Goose Island

Image

Flowers and ice…

Image

We stayed the next night at Many Glacier cg, a little farther north. Here are all the rigs lined up at a scenic overlook.

Image

Saw many mt. sheep up close and personal, as well as mule deer and ground squirrels.

Image

They obey the road signs too!

Image

Roe wanted to catch a ground squirrel.

Image

Peaches liked the snow in the cg.

Image

Beth treated us to a scrumptious, Texas sized shrimp dinner and we had our first campfire (thanks to Bob who collected the wood and made the fire.)

Image

Then on to Canada’s Waterton Lakes Park. We had a smooth crossing of the border…the women breezed right through. Both of the men’s rigs were boarded. Could have been something Beth said about them maybe having guns? Beth has a picture of all four of us by this sign, but this is the best I can do.

Image

A little hike to a roaring waterfall along the way. This is a video so you can see and hear it too.

Image

A beautiful campsite on the lake, but the ground was covered with sticky/pitchy seeds that dropped off the trees and stuck to your hair, shoes, dog’s feet and fur and got tracked all in your rv.

Image

It was hard to take the dogs for a walk with all these ground squirrels in the cg.
Image

Sheep and deer also roam through the village and the cg. Here we are eating chili dogs that Ron made for us.

Image

Beth and I took a hike to see another waterfall…Bertha Falls. The views all the way were spectacular…snow capped mountains above and blue green waters of the lake below.

Image

Image

One of the good things about that hike was that it was all downhill….on the way back.

Image

In the evening, our new friends Tommy & Olga invited us to tour the rest of the park in their tow vehicle. Only the women went…bet the guys were sorry. We saw many waterfalls.

Image
And rushing streams..

Image

And a frozen lake….really cool.
Image

Some loons on the open water near the edge of the lake.
Image

Beth paying me back for the snowball I threw at her. You can see the snowball in flight on the backdrop of sky.
Image

And the three bears. You’ve been waiting for bears, haven’t you? Here’s the first little grizzly…guess he was Baby Bear.
Image

This one was definitely Papa Bear. We watched him eat and tried to get clear pics for a long time.

Image

Image

And finally…I think this was juvenile bear….laying down in the road to eat.
Image

Image

Here’s a video of Papa Bear.
Image

We are now near Calgary with WiFi for two nights. I’m going into the city Monday to try to get my fan cover replaced. Roe thinks this is dog heaven because there’s an off leash dog area all along the river here. He made lots of new fur friends today.

What a trip you are having and being so good to share with us thank you

LIZ...your photos and videos are fantastic! I am REALLY envious of you all now that I can see and remember just how beautiful it is in that area. That kind of scenery is my style, for sure. The videos make it seem as if we are THERE! I wish my camera took videos as good as your does....mine seem to be more hesitant and jerky. (I took some of the falls in the KOA which I need to download and post, come to think of it.)

It seems as if you have the perfect sized caravan for the Ididaroad! Thank you so much for keeping us posted with these wonderful travel logs!

Now off I go to Beth's blog to see more!! And check out Bob's blog, too.

Was the Prince of Wales Hotel open? When hubby and I were there in fall '06, it was open. When the All-Girl Trip went in May '08, it was closed for rennovation. I was soooo disappointed. The outside scenery was still spectacular, but the inside of the hotel is, too. I was sorry the girls had to miss it.

I have the same picture of Cameron Lake in Glacier as you do (the person in the foreground is one of the All-Girl Westward Hos). Top/Left pic is mine, 2nd one is yours...

Oh, how I want to go back. I wanted to live there. Hubby did not. So here we are in Tennessee!! :)
Maybe someday...

I'm enjoying the trip through you guys and will admit to taking mental notes....."so this is a good idea!" I think the size of a group would be important. Large enough to not drive each other crazy (time will tell, right?) And small enough to be able to consult with each other and change plans as you go along as needed or in order to take advantage of the moment.....

Oh, that was what I forgot in my last post - how are you all keeping in touch with one another? Do you all stop for gas at the same time? Potty breaks? Lunch breaks? Gorgeous scenery breaks? Do you all drive the same speed?

You're up to 5 vehicles now? I'm having a hard time imagining the logistic difficulties of staying together.

But I sure am enjoying your voyage!

Boy, do you guys bring back memories. The pics are fantastic and great that you got to see bears so soon into your journey. We took the boat on Waterton Lake to Goat Haunt and hiked back and then the other way. Also had high tea at the Lodge. That was fun as there was a wedding going on while we had tea. Looking forward to continuing our trip. carold

We didn't go up to the Prince of Wales Hotel. Carol didn't say a word until we were long gone from there that she wanted to. We shall have to slap her silly to speak up.

As to caravans - logistically, 2 rigs is probably the best :) . We've got a good group of people. I purchased a walkie talkie to use with Sparkle in NM and then with Liz here. 2 of the guys have walkies, but rarely turn them on, or leave them on overnight so they have no batteries the next day (I think this is a guy thing) - therefore it's hard to know what they want. Liz or I do the leading - and when we want to stop - the whole group stops. Ha. Works for us very well. And IF they would use their walkies and ever say they wanted to stop, we would stop for them also.

The most important part of traveling in a group, is agreeing on the type of places to camp - and therefore the size of rigs involved. We have an assortment from Liz's B the smallest, to now a 40+ footer. Some places, it just can't go. Especially towing a car, too. Also, in both Canada and AK there are pulloffs off the road where you can stop for the night. If you have too many rigs or too long of rigs, you won't all fit. Things to think about. If you are only going to stay in fancy rv parks, then the big rigs will fit - but you might not see all the scenery and you'll have way higher costs.

I'm not sure how long the folks in the 40+ foot rig will stay with us - as long as they want, and they fit - I'm not sure they'll be able to go to all the parks. One of the guys with us had the longest rig at 35 feet (no toad) - and we were limited to one of the 3 cg's at Waterton as nothing over 30 feet on some of the roads there.

Today is my first day in weeks where I feel I'm back in civilization. Totally different being in a normal rv park vs the state/national/city places and boondocking spots.

Man, I thought I was losing my mind...I KNEW I had just recently seen a picture of the Prince of Wales Hotel and I think I went through every post in every category trying to find it, including RECIPES (just kidding...). Anyway, it finally dawned on me that it was on your blog, Beth!!! I am SOOOOO glad I am not losing my mind!

How close were you when you got the picture - close, or you have a very LONG lens! Maybe you can get up there next time. It's unbelievable. I need to read about its history.

Stay safe, travelers. And I think you're right - it's a guy thing with the walkies. They're probably happy to let the women lead the way, eh?

Michelle...it's a good thing that the women are leading the way...the story of wandering in the desert for 40 days and 40 nights comes to mind. ;)
