Tonight there have been quite a few fireworks going off around here. There are pretty good ones in the next community over, just over the wall between us. I could see them from my living room window while watching TV. I can still hear other ones in the other direction but can't see them from here. The cats aren't the least bit bothered by any of that, luckily.
Anne, sorry Joe has such a hard time with them. I think it is fairly common with dogs.

Tomorrow morning I go get my new hearing aid. The lady showed me two different kinds when I was there last time. One goes around behind the ear and one fits inside the ear. I didn't like the feeling of the one that fits inside, but the other one was much more comfortable so I went with that one. I really don't care if anyone can see it, altho my hair will cover it up anyways unless I pin it back.

Have a good night!

Good morning, Barbie, and all who follow.

Barbie, thanks for thinking of me and Joe. The meds I got from the vet for Joe really took the edge off for him - the prescription said I could give up to 4 capsules at a time, I ended up giving him 2. After a half hour or so, I could tell that he was a bit out of it, but not totally crashed.

Just about right, I think.

I confined him to his crate during the evening - in the past, without meds, he would claw at the walls of his crate and the crate doors and even thrash a bit, spinning around looking for a way out to escape the noise. Awful to watch. If left loose in the house - pretty much disaster.

With the meds, he just stood there panting, looking a bit confused. He did pee in his crate at the loudest part of the night - I just took him outside and hosed him off with my garden hose. Since it had been 110* during the day, the water coming out of the hose was bathtub warm, and he seemed to enjoy the hose-off before I toweled him off. I kept him on a leash while I cleaned out his crate - I didn't want him running around the house, or looking for an escape from my backyard. When his crate was cleaned (he likes his crate - I have been using crates for my dogs for many, many years) I put him back in the crate for the night. I didn't want to risk him peeing on the carpet or on my bed.

By 11:00 p.m. the noise was still going strong - although, I think, not so bad as years past - and just went to bed. Joe was laying down in his crate, still awake - but not panicked.

This morning Joe is back to his normal, chipper and happy self - one wouldn't know that anything had gone on the previous night.

I was very glad that I got the meds from my vet - they seemed to help tremendously. I will definitely go that way again next year.

Barbie, I also wear an over-the-ear hearing aid, and I also don't care if it shows or not. It is just nice to be able to understand what people are saying.

Good luck with your new aid.

Anne

Anne glad you got some meds for Joe. They are the bomb for sure. My Blossom used to pant, pace, paw at me and just generally distressed. Is heartbreaking to watch. I got Ace from my vet and that sure did help. Used it mostly in July and January and occasional thunderstorm. After a couple years it was determined she was deaf ha ha my life was great then in the boom dept. Emma hates the noise too but she isnt panicked, panting, pacing, she just hides either in the closet or under the bed. This year we had hardly any noise except for last night for about 15 minutes and it wasnt that bad as she never even got off the bed. Her head came up but that was all. She heard a boom when we were outside for our last potty break and that was the shortest pee she has ever done. Then she wanted in the house!!!NOW

I have no problems with hearing, but I want to mention an advantage to the over-the-ear hearing aids. Namely, they let those of us who are talking to people who have problems hearing to know that we need to adjust how we talk a bit--like facing the person when we talk. It is nice to know that someone has a hearing problem so we don't guess that they are just ignoring us if they don't h ear us!!!
