My Property Forestery Mulching project

I mentioned yesterday on Coffee that I was going to have some forestry mulching done on my property to clear out scrawny trees and under growth. Thought I would share some pictures of the project. It was a fascinating thing to watch the transformation. Now I will go over the land, pick up some of the bigger pieces of wood and the run a homemade drag of the soil and let nature do the rest. I have some nice video of this, but can’t get it to download on here, so pics will have to suffice.

The first two pictures are of the machine that did the work.

These next 3 are the before shots.

And now after it’s done.

Sue, your property looks good. Hard to believe that big machine maneuvered between the trees. Hope you have a compost pile for your yard cleanup. Wish I could help you, I have a lot of experience picking up twigs. :D

That’s so nice Sue! My first thought was of Pooh’s ‘100 Acre Wood’.

looks great Sue.... we used to have a 4x4 trips into the National forest here in Jackson Wy we would take trips up into the forest and had people from lots of places go on the trips with us... we had people from Europe tell us that you just didn't see the forest in their country's look like ours ... that they glean their forest taking out the dead wood ect and we just let it fall and become fuel for the fires that will eventually start... totally makes sense to me and looks like you started in your own backyard Sue

Yes, that’s true Shelia. What this does is removes and grinds up all the overgrowth, Invasive species, dead limbs and branches, scrawny trees etc. It leaves behind a thick layer of mulch and debris that covers the soil and prevents erosion, in time it will break down and reduce the acidity levels and restore the Ph balance to the soil. That will in turn allow growth of native plants which will in time, improve wildlife habitat. That is my hope. The problem with our forests is that they are getting so full of dead and dying tress and sometimes jumbled piles of the same. That doesn’t really do much to improve things. Granted, they do rot, but I think it’s gotten to the point where they need some help. Old growth Forests really do not supports a lot of wildlife. Nature used to do that by fire, but now, man has interfered by moving in places where we shouldn’t be and stopping fire before it gets too far. I have created a fire buffer on my property but at the same time I have also hopefully helped to regenerate the Forest. I am excited about this and watching to see what emerges as time goes on. Just giving mom nature some help.

Sue, I agree with everything you just said! One small bit at a time, we could begin to reverse the damage, if everyone understood.

Sue, You are so handy if you start now you could build a tiny house back in your woods for when you are old and grumpy. :D Then rent your main house like the video.

Hahaha, good idea Shirl. But no thanks, I’m not that talented  Plus no rentals allowed in the sub anyway not to mention two homes on same property. I do have a 16 x 20 shed though, hmmmmm.

Mom nature is busy transforming g things already. Inside of a week it’s gone from bare ground to leaf cover.

And yes Velda, you are right. In this case I started a regeneration and now am stepping back and letting nature go to work, the which of you can see she already is. And my neighbors are following suit.

Sue, your property is beautiful. Oldest daughter and I had thoughts of a tiny house for me in her yard but not allowed there either.

Rules can be and are changing, ESP with increase in homelessness combined with lack of available housing. Recently in my county and Sacramento county next to ours, ordinance was passed allowing a speeded up easy process to get permit to build a "granny flat", on your house property. They even offer plans to choose from to save time and architect fees. As its often said, what California does, is often followed by states across the country.

Velda, that is true. Rules can be changed. But in this case, it’s deed restrictions. They are legal and binding in a court of law and run with the land. Would be extremely expensive to even attempt to have them changed and have no room anyway. County and township ordinances, regulations, state laws etc.. regarding size of lots, property line setbacks etc. etc. also come into play. And none of the people who are own property in the subdivision want rental properties here either.
