"Interesting" day - reminds me of the old saying (a curse, really): "May you live in interesting times. . ."

The weather forecast for my area has been up-and-down over the last several days for the coming weekend, predictions mostly in the 108 - 109 range.

Just now, the latest forecast for my area has been revised upward to 115 - 116 for both Saturday and Sunday, with a "cool down" on Monday of "only" 109.

Just as I was reading this new forecast online, my couch began to "rock and roll" a little bit (at about 3:50 p.m., by the clock).

I haven't felt an earthquake in years, (but when one has lived most of their life in California, as I have, one knows that they can happen at any time) and this one felt fairly minor. Waited a bit, (kinda unsure if what I felt really had been an earthquake), checked online and, yep, there were a few of them:

A 5.9 (actually, both not so minor) on the California/Nevada border east of me, a 4.8 south-east of me (with data still coming in). So don't know which one of these I actually felt here.

Earthquakes are always a bit of a concern for me (well. . . more than a bit), because I live about 30 miles directly downstream of Oroville Dam (the largest earth-fill dam in the United States, at 770 feet) about a mile or so from the Feather River (Oroville Dam is a dam on the Feather River).

An earthquake nearby - or under - an earth-fill dam would not be such a good thing (perish the thought - but there is an earthquake fault under the dam, that wasn't known when the dam was built in 1961).

Spent a few minutes making sure I had a few bottles of bottled water, and was sure I knew where my car keys and my purse are. . . But with temps at the moment hovering around 104, with 109 for tomorrow, and those teens I mentioned for Saturday and Sunday, don't know where I would go if Oroville decided to let go.

Just as I caught my breath from the earthquake, I had a phone call (which I didn't answer, as a matter of course). I saw that a voice mail was left, so played it back. A stern female voice informed me that "[garbled] . . . you must contact us immediately, or we will be forced to begin legal action".

Yeah, right. A voice mail informing me of pending legal action. Never happen. So I did what I usually do with these kinds of calls, I deleted the voice mail and "blocked" the phone number that it came from. I have gotten into the habit that if a voice mail comes in that is not from a number I recognize, it automatically goes on the "Blocked Number" list on my phone. I have found this really cuts down on spam telephone calls.

So, that was my day. So far. . .

Looks like there is an ongoing "cluster" of earthquakes on the California/Nevada border as mentioned above (I have only felt the one), as charted by the USGS:

The cluster seems to be located not too far north of Mono Lake - an area known for both seismic and volcanic activity. Also, not terribly far away from the Long Valley supervolcano caldera near Mammoth Mountain:

This could get even more "interesting", but, as such things go, probably will not.

Biggest quake upgraded to 6.0 centered in my favorite childhood camping spot-Markleeville. Over 2 dozen quakes so far, mostly 3-4 on scale. Rock slides closed 395 for a bit until equipment could move rocks. We felt the first big shake but nothng since. Biggest question of the day, since Tahoe has had several quakes in past couple of months, and this 6.0 was not far south of Tahoe, in same "quake zone", was this the "big one " for now, or precursor to a really big Tahoe quake?! Remains to be seen/felt!
Hot here at 103 for several hours and expected very warm evening with 110-112 expected bookended by 108/9's. Staying in with curtains closed and AC on.

not sure what to say but be prepared to move if needed... years ago and I am talking years ago an earthen dam broke in Idaho I think the dam was called the Teton Dam... wiped out a lot of agi land a lot of homes can't remember if there was loss of life or not... we lived here in Jackson at the time because of the name Teton dam many wondered if it was a dam here in this are no it wasn't it was 50-70 miles away just guessing at that!!! but the area recovered and it looks really nice....life has gone on and will continue to go on!!! take care and just be prepared for whatever earthquakes or floods or heat!!!

Funny the different things that are concerning. I'm afraid of earthquakes. I know most just get talked about but the big ones seem to come with no warning. That said, I grew up with tornados and don't take them as seriously as I should. I am afraid of fires and hurricanes and watch closely when in those areas. But earthquakes are one reason I always sigh with relief when I travel through California and get out without any. I do realize they are other places, but my main fear is in California.

Beth I agree. I think it was Nick Russell that would be asked by his readers about where they should move to or travel through while they would list all their fears of weather and potential catastrophes that might befall them. He would then run down a list of all the things they feared plus some that they hadn't thought of. Here in the midwest (I know Sue said that Ohio isn't considered midwest but southwest Ohio does not think of themselves in terms of the lakes), our weather dangers are tornados. I have come close to a few and respect them but have been fortunate enough not to have ever taken a direct hit. I do know individuals in Ohio that have lasting PTSD regarding weather as a result of living through them. I wouldn't not travel across Kansas or Oklahoma because of what might happen.

I try not to do stupid things but at some point I just accept what I can not control and save my energy by not worrying. We can be taken out by accidents and emergencies any time any day in the meantime I will concentrate on life.

But living below a dam, and knowing what Anne knows about said dam would give me something to seriously consider.......

I'd like to experience a mild California earthquake, just so I can say I "survived" it. Dumb idea, of course.

But I did experience one earthquake while sitting in a conference room at Ford in Dearborn, MI, about 10 years ago. Three of us were sitting around a round table and heard a low rumble, and then we all very slowly swayed back and forth a few times. No shaking at all, apparently because it was very deep through granite and centered near Montreal. Mostly, we just sat there dumbly and talked about what it could be and watching each of us swaying! So, we flunked earthquake awareness!

However, that was on the second floor of a two-story building. I would NOT want to experience an earthquake downstream from a dam or on the top floor of a high rise!! Anne, you need to get back into your property search and get away from there.

while living in the midwest we didn't experience tornado's for some reason they have not had them in the town we lived in but we came to visit and camped in a nearby county at a campground that got hit by high winds not a tornado not high enough winds think they were 95 mph but while living in SLC we experienced a tornado did quite a bit of damage north of us and a quake not the big one that is predicted to come not when but will come ... went to work had to hang out while the building was inspected to see if it was safe... oh yes and a flood they sand bagged State street and let it go down the street my husband being the midwestern that he was just stood and shook his head and said they call this a flood??? .... we don't in most area's have the water that you all experience in other parts of this great land.
so they do happen just rarely and not with the same volume others experience... they in Ut actually had a pretty good quake a year + ago but again not the big one

I heard about that quake but I did not feel it but heard that some people here did feel it. My biggest worry is if we get one big enough to cause us to lose power in the summer with this awful heat. With no where to go to cool off, it could be deadly for a lot of people. I think the swimming pools would be crowded.

I have felt many earthquakes, being raised in CALIF. Don’t give them much thought. However, now that I live in a high rise, surrounded by other high rises, I need a plan of action for an earthquake. Going outside is NOT a good idea. Too much danger from falling glass .we have a small bath room on the inside of our condo, that will be our safe place.
I will be spending a week on Mammoth Mt in August. Hope big quake does’t hit then!!!
Our weather is very nice. Only difference between HI and LOW is 6/7 degrees.

I used to think about how nice it would be to live on one of the top floors of a high-rise, however, in the past few years, I have completely changed my mind. Besides buildings falling down, there have been fires in high-rise buildings. Neither of those sounds very good to me, so I think I will stick to shorter buildings!!

Quite a few years ago, I stayed with my mother and niece and nephew on the 7th floor of the Disney World Contemporary Resort. One night when I went out to get snacks and groceries, the power went out. I was very happy to discover that the emergency stairs were on the outside of the building on the ends. That made it very easy to climb up or down and still feel not closed in as you would in a regular stairwell. I always thought that was an excellent idea and would make it easier to escape in a fire.

By the way, after that experience and another in Philadelphia where the power went out in a hotel I was staying in, I have ALWAYS traveled with at least one small flashlight and a couple of extra batteries. I strongly recommend it to help you get out in the dark.

We had an earthquake in MD when I was working and it was scary. My computer monitor rocked back and forth, a bulletin board came crashing to the floor and Steve said our motorhome was rocking from side to side so bad he thought it would flip. We've also had our share of hurricanes and our house has flooded to the point of destruction. MD has had tornadoes but luckily we haven't experienced those. As far as I concerned, our friends out west are living with very extreme temperatures and that's something to take into consideration also.

Lyn, keep an eye out for fires up there. I just heard there is one near Yosemite. Lots of bad fires already in many areas in northern CA.

Even being a half mile from the San Andreas fault, I feel relatively OK here since there is nothing around me to collapse on my house. I think the worst that could happen is my house comes off the foundation. I think the biggest issue would be the power outage, especially if it is in the summer and is super hot out.

what they told us about the big quake that "will" happen in SLC is more damage will be done with the now I don't remember the term but guess a lot of the land in the west part of the valley will turn some how into a soft or sandy or liquid maybe that was it... like I said I truly don't remember what the term was.....I don't know if that happens in other places or if it is just something different to that area
