Stations of the Cross

Right down the road from the cute chapel and small cemetery was a sign for "Stations of the Cross". Since Sparkle has 4-wheel drive, we drove up to them and then walked around. Here's a couple pics of them, starting with the only sign for the - from a little side road:

Wow,...that's different. I'd like to see that place. And this was certainly the weekend for doing the stations!

Forgive me if this is obvious and I'm being a brick, but what is their purpose?

I believe (excuse me if I have it wrong) but in Jerusalem I think, there are 12 Stations of the Cross. One for each event leading up to the Crucifixion. For example - Where Jesus was scourged. Where he fell to his knees from the weight of the Cross.
People say a prayer at each Station. There were only two here. Beth and I walked up the draw to see if there was more. I'm not Catholic, so if I have this wrong feel free to jump in. But what an appropriate topic for Easter!

Sparkle's got it almost right. so there were only two? Hmmmm........ vandals taken the others? Here's a description of the stations from wikipedia:

The Stations themselves are usually a series of 14 pictures or sculptures depicting the following scenes:

Jesus is condemned to death
Jesus is given his cross
Jesus falls the first time
Jesus meets His Mother
Simon of Cyrene carries the cross
Veronica wipes the face of Jesus
Jesus falls the second time
Jesus meets the daughters of Jerusalem
Jesus falls the third time
Jesus is stripped of His garments
Crucifixion: Jesus is nailed to the cross
Jesus dies on the cross
Jesus' body is removed from the cross (Deposition or Lamentation)
Jesus is laid in the tomb and covered in incense.
Although not traditionally part of the Stations, the Resurrection of Jesus is sometimes included as a fifteenth station.[4][5]

Thank you, Cedar. I knew I was winging it. But the part of it about there being Stations in Jerusalem is correct, right? An old lady of the time took someone round to all the spots and told them what had happened and where.

Thanks, Cedar. If there were more than the two - we didn't see them - but that doesn't mean they might not have been there and we didn't know where to look. Or they might be a work in progress? Or a work that is disintegrating. We didn't talk to anyone at the chapel, cemetery or here - so we only can go by what we saw/found.

Anyway, the stations are a Catholic thing (I don't know if Episcopaleans or Lutherans use them). You see them in most Catholic churches.
