Back Spasms

Lol, Karen was interested so here goes. Out of nowhere, horrific back pain. So intense and unbearable I called an ambulance. In and out of hospital for same pain four more times. They treated with morphine, sent me home and the pain came back. I have adverse reactions to most medication. Spasms stopped but still unbearable pain. Me, my family at wits end. I had a lucid moment and connected muscles and physical therapy. Family called my go to guy, he said get her in here. The spasms stopped but the muscles were still so tight they radiated the pain. Physical therapy and of all things over the counter Aleve have made me think I will live a few more years. :D My brother made me a beautiful carved walking stick. It is heavy but I took it on my walks down country roads. Self isolation, inactivity and using stick we think caused the spasms. So I will continue PT and learn exercises so I don’t have to experience that pain again. Rick, therapist, ask if I will be ready for spring training. I said “damn straight”

Shirl, I'm so glad the cause of your back pain was found and that you are getting the necessary therapy with hopes you never have to go through that again. Steve had a back spasm some years back and he fell on the ground because of the pain and cracked a rib. Keep doing what you're doing.

Shirl, I'm so glad you found the reason and that therapy is working. Love your attitude.

Hi Shirl.

Thanks for sharing your story. I really enjoy reading all of your posts, so please don't hold back! I especially like posts (from anyone!) that describes a problem (whatever the problem might be) and how the problem was solved, or even just addressed. I think we can all extrapolate these kinds of posts into our own lives, either now or later. I know I do.

I'm thinking that most of us ladies on here are of a "certain age", and one never knows what life holds in store.

Glad you are feeling better!

Anne

Shirl I think you are on the right track. Muscle spasms can pretty much incapacitate us at any given moment. Then they can take a while to heal. Glad you have found a good therapist and drugs LOL my drugs of choice are always Motrin and Tylenol LOL I dont like narcotics or rather they dont like me. I can tolerate Dilaudid but then I sound like every other drug addict ha ha

Heat can help relax the muscles also. I used to get muscle spasms in my upper back, and I remember one time when I was in southern Arizona in agony. I stopped at a drugstore and stocked up on those instant and also some reheatable pads you put in a microwave. I had to drive that day, so I taped a pad to my shoulder with duct tape! I had to stop every hour and reheat it. Late that afternoon, I pulled into a small town and found an emergency room where the nurse practitioner gave me a prescription for muscle relaxants. I later bought a heating pad, but those require electricity, which I did not always have.

Hope you get some relief with PT.

It was just a year ago that I had a back spasm while in the dentists chair! I was incapacitated for a good week or more with agonizing pain! So I can empathize! Glad you are feeling better!
