This is what I have (food) that was in the heat (100*) for awhile. Just wondering if you think it is still OK or should I toss it?

-lemon juice (new)
-pickle slices (opened)
-jar of strawberries in syrup (new)
-strawberry preserves (opened)
-Baileys (opened)
-Miracle Whip (opened)
-ketchup (opened)
-Yum Yum sauce (has egg yolks in it) (new)
-peanut butter (opened)
-sliced mushrooms (new)
-alfredo sauce (new)

"New" meaning unopened, still sealed.

Thanks!

I would toss anything with eggs or hat was open but for the rest I would go by my nose and taste

Many of those items are stored in warehouses that reach high temps. So I agree with Judy, but would also expect the open pickles are most likely ok.

I would keep everything except the Yum Yum sauce and the Miracle whip

For myself, and this is just me, I always ask myself: Is it worth the risk to eat something that may - or may not - be "iffy", or just toss whatever it is and be safe and not worry about it?

The risk being (however small that risk) is to maybe end up barfing my brains out, with maybe even a trip to the emergency room, later on.

For me, and this is just me, the answer is always "no, not worth the risk".

Which amount of money would I rather lose? $2.00 of tossed pickles (or whatever) or a potential $2,000 at the E-room? Easy answer, at least for me.

I wouldn't keep any of it. Zip. But, again, that's just me.

I will confess that being so sick I almost wanted to die with food poisoning once, gave me a whole different perspective on such things.

Thank you for all the suggestions!

Being that I too have experienced food poisoning several times before, I elected to toss pretty much all of it and went shopping yesterday to replace it all. Just not worth the risk like Anne said. Been there, done that, not fun! :o

Glad you tossed it all. I wouldn’t touch one of those items. Good choice.

I have a culinary degree for what it's worth...
First read the label. If it says refrigerate after opening that's your first instruction.
Second if something was unopened and shelf stable when you bought it, it's still good.
If you got it from a refrigerated section in the store it's now trash.
Peanut butter and preserves doesn't need refrigeration. They are from a time before refrigeration. It's normally contamination (ie not using a clean knife between the PB and the jelly that causes issues) so read label. Refrigeration is normally advised due to contamination.
Neither does most produce. Refrigeration often extends shelf life, but is not required.
Due to a acidic nature of mayo it is stable. It's the other things we put in the mayo that spoil.
Baileys is fine. The alcohol stabilizes it. No refrigeration required.
Brined or pickled products like pickles should be ok as brining is a preservation method that predates refrigeration.
Ketchup is refrigerated to make it appear thinker and pour slower but even Mr. Heinz himself said refrigeration was not required. Restaurants don't normally refrigerate ketchup. The vinegar base in mustards and other condiments acts as a preservative. Refrigeration just covers the company's tail if the produce gets contaminated during use.

Warehouses and trucks get hot. Like 140 degree hot as they sit in the sun. Shelf stable can handle 100 degrees.

Thank you for all your suggestions. Melissa, you sound like you know a lot about this kind of thing.

I threw out the pickles, mostly because I didn't like the brand and taste of them anyways. I got food poisoning once from peanut butter but it was several years past it's expiration date.

The Baileys I tossed (I am sorry Karen!) reluctantly, but I did get food poisoning from Baileys once at a bar. Ordered a Baileys on the rocks and within half an hour I was cramping up and ran home and was sicker than a dog for a whole day and night. I couldn't attribute it to anything I had eaten earlier that day. I am very careful to keep that refrigerated always now, especially after it has been opened. Just don't want to ever go thru that again if I can help it and most of that stuff doesn't cost that much to replace anyways. (if it makes you feel any better, Karen, the bottle was only about 1/3 full.)

I had given anything that I was sure wouldn't survive the heat, to my roommate and a neighbor before I left.
