Moving On in Hidalgo Mexico

Postby asirimarco » Sat Mar 14, 2009 12:21 pm

I am trying to catch up on things. Today the Internet is cooperating a little bit for a while any way. We are still in Queretaro - love the city - and will be leaving MOnday a.m. Probably be back in Texas sometime Tuesday - unless we get sidetracked somewhere. Kind of looking forward to being in the states again. Love it here but....
Yesterday we drove back up to Hidalgo. That is where the start of the Mexican Independence began in 1810. It is a real neat little village about 65 miles from here.
Before I go to Hidalgo I want to share this video I took last weekend in one of the plazas here in Queretaro - one of the high schools was putting on a big production there - this is a group of the high school teachers dancing those are trays with open bottles of beer- remember to right click and open in a different window

now back to Hidalgo - just some photos
It had to have been 80 degrees out - she has on long sleeves, her apron and her shawl.

Here's another method of delivering the milk

There is always music being played somewhere in every town
Image
One of the stores we passed while driving down the street - they are getting modern
Image
She was sitting in a doorway across the street from the underware store - wonder what she was thinking
Image
Lots of ceramic produced in Hidalgo - how would you like to face this first thing in the morning after a night of imbibing?
Image
This was spectacular - it is tile - Talavara - it is a rug about 5 x 7 Yummmmmm!

Here are some more pictures of Hidalgo that I put together for my web page - hope you enjoy them - we bought the dishes and have them I hope packed well in the basement of Alfie.

have to get back and take laundry out now - Am trying to get some pictures of Guanajuato together - it was beautiful. Also of our favorite Queretaro.
Jennie we are staying at Juriquilla Hotel and RV it is in Church's book pg 256 3rd edition but used to be called Azteca. We also stayed here 30 years ago. Its just north of town on 57. Easy to get into and out of. Restaurant and gas station. Has internet in the restaurant.

What great pictures and travalogue you provide! Hidalgo may have been short in stature, but he was quite a guy! I love all the colors...even the unique commode, but especially your new set of dishes.

We may all have withdrawal symptoms when you leave Mexico. Be careful around the border towns where they have all the warnings re violence.

What a lovely town! Your dishes are pretty, but have to say I prefer the red ones below yours....I'm not much of a blue person, altho if we were to meet sometime I certainly wouldn't turn down a meal or cup of coffee in them! LOL! Yes, please be careful coming close to the border, the news coming from Tijuana and El Paso area is pretty scary.

We had a blast in Hidalgo too! We were not able to go in the church when we were there because they were having a wedding but we did get a photo of the bride and groom afterwards and the cutest little girl there. I watched a guy pulling a super long rope outside and he was the bell ringer for the church and pulled and pulled that long line to make the bells chime. I had a old woman come up to me begging and probably the same woman you took a photo of, she was very tiny and looked very very old. of course it broke my heart to see her beg so I gave her some money. Most people do not realize that unless you have family to take care of you when you are old you are pretty much at the mercy of begging to stay alive down there. There is no welfare or programs for the elderly.

I did buy a oval bowl and a tall vase pottery for all my utencils from there. We were told not to take photo's of the artists doing the pottery. You were lucky to get a photo!

Dan still giggles that he tried "Beer" ice cream....yes, I wrote that right B-E-E-R Ice cream!!! He said it tasted good!!!

Alot of the pottery made there goes to Los Algodones, Tonala, .....I'd give anything to go back to Tonala and stock up on stuff for the casita!! They have great stuff there.

I was in that area where Carol is in Feb-March 2007 so check out my blog then if you want to see other photo's of that area.

Glad to know you have been safe throughout this trip.

That shot of the elderly lady in the window is worthy of any art show in the country! What a shot, you captured her mood so well! I still think you should put together a book!

As always, enjoyed all the photos and descriptions. I agree with Cedar - need to publish a book on your adventures
