Buying my rig - should I look in domicile state first?

Postby bghouse » Thu Jun 01, 2017 11:43 am

I've been trying to figure out where I should be looking for my rig. Should I try to focus my search close to where my domicile state will be? (still deciding on that). I'm guessing I need to get to where that will be pretty quick to get license and registration, correct?

Some folks talked about using a broker and buying from eBay - but I can't seem to find these brokers when I try a google search. And of course, the flying all over to find a rig is going to get incredibly expensive I would think.

Still waiting to trip over that big pile of money in the road - lol

Check with your current state and your soon to be domicile state about sales tax. Each state has its own rules, but you have to be careful switching the title over very soon after you buy it or you may end up paying sales tax twice.

Some states are very picky and suspicious that someone buying in another state is doing so to avoid sales tax, hence you need to know the rules.

Also, most states do allow you to drive a vehicle "home" without tags as long as you drive in a fairly direct route home from the place you bought it. Having to buy temporary plates could mean paying sales tax in that state and then having your own state insist on another sales tax payment to get it titled in that state!!!

My domicile state is SD. Purchased my current rig in Arizona and did the paperwork long distance.

I look everywhere when looking. Many have purchased sight unseen or made agreement with the seller that they could walk away if the rig is misrepresented.

Thanks! I definitely have more research to do. SD is on my short list. I love being a resident of Washington State for so very many other reasons, but the needing a sticks & brick for registration is the killer. Texas is my other potential I think.

I bought my Roadtrek sight unseen from Vantastic vans in New Mexico. They had lots of pictures posted and the salesman did a phone walkthru with me that covered every ding and scratch. I paid $1000 for them to deliver it to me in Texas. When it got here we did another walkthru and I could have refused to accept it but would have lost the delivery fee. I was very, very happy with them and their service. I financed it through my local bank who dealt with the dealership over the phone. It was listed for $25,000 as a consignment but I paid $18,000. Told them tht was what I had, period. It was a one owner with 100,000 miles and had all the service records.
