You were starting out when the others were returning, so if you had gotten sick or injured, you would have been in trouble. Any cell service in that area? I am always taking my cell phone from now on, plus a flashlight, in case I get stuck somewhere after dark so someone can find me.
Glad you were smart enough to turn around and not continue. Nice that the trail had a bench and some shade, though.
There were still a lot of people in the parking lot when I started out, so I wasn't sure how many were on the trail or planning to be. I did pass another couple while on my way back. But if I'd been really smart, I would have stuck to my original plan and done the hike early in the morning.
