Just got word today via a DNR newsletter that I get online that there is going to be a new Campground opening up on June 23rd in Wilderness State Park just south of Mackinaw City. This campground is going to be on top of the wooded sand dune bluffs in the park and will have full hookups. There are only 18 sites, so I expect that will fill fast Units must be self contained as there are no rest room facilities in this area, but there are in the other campgrounds in the park. Sites are supposed to be grass and some have great lake views. Nice wide sites from what I have seen on the DNR's reservation site. I plan to book a site for the week of July 11th for a couple of days to check things out and then again after things start quieting down later on. So if anybody is heading into MI this summer, this might be something you will want to check into I suspect it is going to fill up fast though. Could be a possible GTG site with all there is to do in Mackinaw too. They are going to run about $45 a night though.

That is so cool Sue! I've wanted to go to Mackinaw for long time, especially after seeing the movie Somewhere In Time with Jane Seymour and Christopher Reeve.
Even at that price, it's got to be a heck of a lot cheaper than staying in the Grand Hotel. Not sure I'd get there this year, but maybe whenever I get a chance to do the Lake Michigan circle tour.

A year too late for me. I will be spending very little time in Michigan in 2016, but it looks interesting for another year.
I will not be making it back from California and Oregon until late August for my grandson's birthday, and then will be heading to the Florida Keys in late September.
That is a beautiful spot, but those going ought to know it is a substantial drive from Mackinaw City and the ferries to the Island. That place has great potential and the campground they had on the lake was incredibly cramped, with small spots that were not clearly demarcated, so that people parked cars along the roadway that blocked others in. I had a terrible time getting out. Like a lot of older campgrounds, it really needed some work.

Wilderness SP headquarters is 9.7 miles from the center of Mackinaw City, or say about 10 miles from the ferry docks. I'm not sure exactly where the new loop is in relation to park headquarters (or to the older camping loops either).
Arnold line still allows dogs on board; I don't know about the others. It sounds as though there are more services for pets on the Island than there used to be, too:
http://www.arnoldline.com/other-links/faq I think Arnold still has the traditional ships rather than hydrofoils.
Mmmm . . . I'm thinking of pasties . . .

9 o r 10 miles is no big deal. Nice and quiet out there and I forgot to mention, it's next to the International Dark Sky Park.

JudyJB, you would love these new sites. Some as a long as 75 ft and 50 feet wide. Something to keep in mind for a future time in MI.

Full hookup, good sized lot and a view is a deal at $45. Will have to check it out.
