Special Request for Abandoned Dogs

You guys know I've been adopting some dogs lately. I've been working with a lady (Denita, East Texas Road Dogs) who completely on her own, out of her own pocket, rescues strays off the streets and sometimes from kill shelters. She has them completely vetted, spayed or neutered and all their shots at a vet that gives her a low rate. She asks only $50 rehoming fee and does a home check which NONE of the shelters do and she makes them sign an agreement to return the dogs to her if they EVER decide they no longer want it. She just rescued a little Chihuahua mix from a kill shelter that wasn't even going to put her up for adoption because she was VERY pregnant. She delivered five puppies Thanksgiving day. Just a few days ago she rescued a female Lab mix who had been dumped and was living on the streets for some time and was so pregnant she could hardly walk. She gave birth to eight living puppies the day after Thanksgiving. Now Denita already has quite a few she is trying to find homes for so the addition of all these puppies and the mom's is a financial strain on her. She lives on disability and makes extra money cleaning, doing grooming and some dog sitting. She lives in a large shop building that is fenced on some property owned by a church member and her only heat is a wood stove. Long story short, I'm asking for any donation you can afford at this time of year, even $5 buys some dog food and that's what she buys before even her own food. She is also caring for a dog that is paralyzed and is tryiing to build him one of those doggy wheelchairs. She has a Paypal account called EAST TEXAS ROAD DOGS. If you have a Paypal account you can donate by clicking on "Pay or Send Money", then "Send Money to Friends or Family" and putting in East Texas Road Dogs. If you can't afford anything this time of year I completely understand. I like donating where I know exactly where my money goes and not into some corporate executive's pocket. Thanks for letting me rant.

Karen, I just tried to send this gal some money, but PayPal wants a phone #. If you've got one & can send me a PM, I'd like to send her a little something.

I have to say, though, that I hope she doesn't get herself into a hoarding situation, and won't let go of her charges.

God bless her.

Laura

Thanks Laura. She has adopted four of her "road dogs" this month. She really isn't going to end up hoarding. Her email is flurryrose2015@gmail.com. I think you can use that instead of a phone number.

I don't now why Paypal is being so difficult. Her name is Denita Harley, her phone number is 903 841-1434. If its easier you can mail your donations to me at 960 County Road 2418, Leesburg, TX 75451. Make it out to Denita Harley and I'll see she gets it. Her email is flurryrose2015@gmail.com. Thanks to everyone who is able to make a donation at this time of year. She's a big hearted lady.

Liz, looking forward to seeing you. I'd be happy to pass on any donation you want to give. Thanks. We have a really rutted driveway but I got my rig in and out, just very slowly. If you want to you're welcome to stay here free. I have a 30 amp plug, water and you can even dump before you leave. If you don't want to chance the driveway, Bob Sandlin State Park is only about five miles from me and its a beautiful lake for kayaking but it might be too cold this time of year. My phone is 830 955-1152, Just give me a call when you get close and I'll give you the GPS to our house. If you have a Garmin it takes you right here; the GPS on my son's phone was about 2 miles off.

Karen,
I'm hoping to make a donation next paycheck, and have been meaning to tell you about Save Our Shelter. I found out about in from their CW TV show. They help shelters by doing rebuilds of housing pens, whatever is needed and they donate a years worth of food to the shelter at the end of the project. They also work with Petsmart charities.

You can submit an application for East Texas Road Dogs, maybe they can help to some extent if they can't do a full rebuild, etc. Here is the application form if you want to give it a try. I was going to fill it out, but thought it would be better if you do it since you're familiar with the situation.

I hope things get better for her & am sending her and you blessings for helping the forgotten animals.

Thanks for the info on the outfit that helps shelters. Denita does all this on her own, she doesn't have a 501c so I doubt they would help her. She has a large fenced yard and a lot of crates for the dogs already. Her primary need is always food and vet bills as she has every dog spayed or neutered and their first shots and heartworm testing. She also actually does home checks and doesn't just take their word for it. If the adoptees have another animal she insists on a meet and greet to be sure they get along.

As for the shelters out here, almost all of them are kill shelters and even sponsoring (paying their adoption fee) is no guarantee they won't go ahead and kill. The almost automatically kill a dog if its pregnant. They don't vet the dogs at all. Both of the guys (Lily and Lucy) were covered in fleas and Lily was really badly matted. Both on going to be killed within hours of my adopting them. They actually brought Lucy to me from the kill room. Most of the shelters are sad because these little towns out here don't have the money to spend on keeping them "nice." And dumping a dog seems to be kind of the norm out here if you no longer want the animal. I sponsored a ten year old Mastiff that the family brought in because she was old and they wanted a new puppy (which the shelter refused to let them adopt there). Glad to say she did get adopted.

Thanks so much for any help you guys are able to give. If you're interested go to her Facebook page EAST TEXAS ROAD DOGS to see what she's doing. She currently has, in addition to others, two sets of new puppies.
