Jackson, WY to Ft. Laramie etc.

Was wondering who's been from Jackson after visiting the Grand Tetons, and gone on to Ft. Laramie etc. Am thinking of doing that and visiting the the Oregon Trail Wagon ruts historical stuff etc. But wondering which may be the best route over and if it's worth gong all that way for when I don't plan to take I-80 back across toward home.. Debating as to whether to do that or save it for another trip. Right now, I--80 looks like the best route as far as Laramie and then cutting north from there.
