Ordering glasses or lenses over the internet

Postby JudyJB » Sat Jan 24, 2015 2:39 pm

I really need new glasses and I plan to get my vision checked soon because it has been over two years.

But with transition bifocals and the sun-sensitive adjusting lenses, my last pair of just lenses cost me $900. Ouch! :o

So I already have some almost-new frames I like. Anyone ever order lenses over the internet?? And how did you get the lenses put in your frames if you did that?

I've never ordered glasses on the internet, but an acquaintance of mine has and was pleased with her purchase. But it was a complete pair not just lenses. I'm not sure how they would know what shape to make your lenses if they didn't have the frame to work off of.

I have ordered glasses via internet and they were not the best fit but they worked just fine. I ordered them with frames as well, and I use them only for driving. I am not a fan of optometrists (who are not MDs) and prefer to see an ophthalmologist. The internet glasses cost much less and work fine!

I order from Zenni too. I received three pair of no line bifocals, two pair had the clip on sunglasses and paid a little over a 100. I've been very pleased with them. Before you go to your appointment run off the sheet on the website that has all the information that they need to fill your order and have it filled out by the doctor. Pupillary distances, etc.

I have bought glasses from both Zinni and 39dollarglasses.com. I was happy with both places. 39 runs a little higher priced now (altho still very affordable) but you can send them your frames and they will make lenses to fit. I did that with a favorite pair of frames I had purchased in Colorado years earlier and they did a great job of making the lenses to fit.

As Karen said, I use Zenni (on her recommendation). I tried 39 on Barbie's but they couldn't do my prescription with my pd size. Zenni can. I've now ordered 3 pairs from them, loved all - two are no line progressives and I actually have two new frames picked out - have to decide which ones I want - will be under $100 for either one - one less than the other, but I'm having trouble deciding which one I want :)

How do you get the actual fit of the frames as to width and length of ear pieces and then adjustment of fit? I am interested because my last pair of glasses was $800 after insurance (complicated heavy duty RX).

I bought my last pair of lenses at Costco. They were much more reasonable than the stand-alone optical places. I tried an online pair once, sorry I don't remember which, but wasn't happy with the lenses. I was able to get Costco to put new lenses in a frame I already had, and they only charged $18 extra for that.

Velda, I've never needed to get them adjusted ... not sure why ... but I do know that most optical places, including Walmart will do that for you. Some don't even charge, and if they do, it's usually minimal. You don't even have to tell them you ordered online - just that you travel and can't get back.

Good tips, thanks Beth. I need to find a new doctor as in the time since my last exam my long time (20+ years) ophthalmologist died. And I detested his partner. Soon as hubby finishes radiation I need to get a few things done. My turn!

I ordered a pair online, and they were fine. Actually I was a bit surprised, because my prescription is complicated. They did email me to confirm that the numbers were accurate! Luckily, the frame I had chosen could be used for those lenses; I've had trouble with that before, too.

I always have trouble with the earpieces, and these were no exception. I've yet to encounter an office that can get them right, so I wasn't surprised. I fiddled with them as I always do, and they ended up fine.

Since this post, I've ordered a new pair and they are on the way. Hope I like what I selected ... would have gotten the same frame again, but it's been discontinued :(
