Christmas Dinner

Postby MelissaD » Tue Dec 23, 2014 12:33 pm

Just curious if everyone has a traditional Christmas meal? Is it a major event or do you try to keep it simple?

My parents come over for Christmas breakfast, which traditionally is biscuits with sausage gravy and scrambled eggs, all from scratch. Dad loves biscuits and gravy and Mom won't make it for him so we fix it for him. We then open presents with the little one. Mom and Dad are then off to my brother for lunch. Have some Baily's for Mom's coffee. Mom like to watch the kid(s) open their gifts.

Dinner is a prime rib roast we put in the rotisserie served with peas and onions (favorite of mine, but hard to find these days). That's the traditional part, the rest varies. GB like sweet potatoes so we'll have baked sweet potatoes instead of mashed and just to torment Phoenix, I'll make a green bean casserole with the French's fried onion (love them silly fried onions). I guess the crescent rolls are also traditional  This year we'll have two for dinner but we like to keep it small.

We'll be joining two other couples and a single guy who is parked next to us, so it'll be seven of sharing the meal mid afternoon. The hostess will be preparing a pork roast and roast beef with mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, gravies and creamed onions. I'll be making coleslaw, devilled eggs, Watergate salad, biscuits, applesauce and chocolate cream pie. Another couple will be bringing appetizers and there will also be an assortment of sodas, wines and water. Weather permitting, we'll be sitting outside.

We used to always have turkey and trimmings but have gotten away from it because son does not eat it and a turkey (we like dark and white so a breast only was not to our desire), has been taken off the menu. We decided to do steaks and twice baked potatoes this year, as it is easy. I will get the potatoes baked and stuffed today so I can just reheat on Christmas. Our continued tradition is for Christmas Eve which has always been split pea soup which we always enjoy and it's close to the only time I make it each year. I usually fix some kind of egg casserole for Christmas breakfast and this year will be a crockpot version with hash browns and bacon and sausage.

The 24th is our anniversary. tGM booked a hotel for 2 nights on Treasure Island (he says the name fits me -at least today  ). He's made reservations for dinner and I guess we will figure out Christmas Day. Everyone enjoy your holidays wherever and whatever you do. I'm happy to be here to celebrate. carold

Can I come to your house, Melissa? The prime rib sounds fantastic.

I have not cooked a big Christmas or even Thanksgiving dinner for many years since even when I lived in Michigan, my kids were both out of state and had small kids. For most of the 2000s, I had my mother to worry about during the holidays since she was either in senior housing or in memory care towards the end.

I worked Christmas for years. The family did dinner Christmas Eve. Since I'm not a turkey fan, I liked when it was at my house. One year my ex and I fixed lasagne and lobster tails. The 10 years my so and I worked together on Christmas Day we found a restaurant open and went there after work. I believe sometimes our tip equaled our bill.

In my 20s and 30s it was tradition to meet up with friends at a local bar with a band late on Christmas night.

In other words, I have strange traditions.

This year I'll be visiting an old family friend. I'll be taking a couple kinds of fudge, but not our old family recipe. They might get on me for that! I'll eat whatever they fix. The chance to gtg is the most important to me. Maurine is frail and every year when I come to Arizona and see her I think it might be the last time. I'm grateful her daughter has her coming to her house and invited me to come also.

I got tired of spending Christmas in the kitchen and missing my girls with their new toys. We went for cold cuts and salads after that - at least if it was at my house. :)

 Dinner is at 4pm.

I like to keep it somewhat simple. Being with family and/or friends is what's important to me. Honestly, I don't mind the cooking, it's the clean up after I don't care for.

Had a pot luck last weekend with my 2 brothers and their families. We use to do it Christmas eve but that got to be a bit much. Like it the weekend before. Was hoping to escape somewhere warmer for the holidays but between all the doctors appointments for Phoenix and I, it's just not going to happen.

It will just be Harold and I so I'm not cooking a lot. I missed having turkey at Thanksgiving so I got a turkey breast to cook. Walmart had some small turkey breasts that said they were Cajun Style. They were all frosted up so I couldn't see what they did to make them Cajun Style. I might try one of those sometime. I guess we will have some kind of sweet potatoes since Harold came home with a big box of them. He really likes them but I'm not that crazy about them.

It's suppose to be in the 70's Saturday but with an 80% chance of rain. I would like to go bring the gifts to my Sister and her family but I'm not going in the rain. Maybe it will be good weather after New Years.

My son is working Christmas Day, so he will be coming over tomorrow. My daughter and her family will be going to her in laws for the day and coming to my place on the 31st. My son and I are just going to enjoy finger food, play some cards and watch some home movies.
When kids were young we had the big turkey & ham dinners, with tons of cookies and bars. Lot simpler now. When I was young we also had big turkey dinners at my grandparents with all the cousins, aunts and uncles. Always a great time.

Merry Christmas to all and happy travel in 2015

Christmas Eve is usually turkey and ham. My mom used to have us kids to her little apartment and cook swiss steak. It was awesome! We all really miss that. I wish I knew how to make it.

Roast pork or beef sounds really good too. I am not big on ham and, after having turkey on Thanksgiving, am not really looking forward to that so soon again.

Christmas Day I just spend at home being lazy, maybe watch a DVD or two.
Barbie, Romeow, and Sophie, missing Lola! (and lots of ferrets running around in my heart!)

We've grilled hamburgers for years because we were all getting our rigs and toys ready to leave the day after to the sand dunes. We're doing that again this year even tho none of us are leaving the day after. So I'm making the potato salad and beans and a cheesecake for the grand and I since we're the only 2 that eat dessert.
