I got selected as an alternate for jury service yesterday. The case is estimated to go until the second week of January. So there goes my plan to try and get to Q before Christmas. I'm so disappointed. My cat Amy had 3 lessons in the RV and I was planning on taking her every day until we would leave. I suppose she'll be happy that won't be happening - regularly anyway. I sure hope the case doesn't go any longer because that could really mess up my plans to be in Q when everyone else is there during the RV show. I will definitely be going at some time because I want to get my lost solar panel replaced. As long as I have to be here, I sure wish I was a real juror rather than an alternate.
OK I'll quit whining.

Sandi - After a certain age, you do not need to serve and shouldn't even be contacted!

I'm glad you're doing jury duty. I'll feel bad if called because I won't be able to serve, unless they call while I'm actually in SD. That said, I've never made it as long as they've predicted when on a jury, so anything can happen. Hopefully you'll be finished early.

Gee, Sandi, you haven't yet found out how to get out of jury duty when it is going to interfere with your fun?

I guess not Marda. I walk a straight and narrow path.

About the age and getting out of jury duty. I did some research because I had heard you don't have to serve after 70, though you can volunteer. Per several state sites, plus some Ca county sites and a federal site, jury services only age stipulation is you must be at least 18. No upper limit and the federal explanation, repeated on all the other sites I visited is: to allow you out of duty because solely of age, would be age discrimination per federal law. Baaa humbug. I don't mind volunteering , but let us retire sometime!

I have a permanent pass for jury duty. One time I sent back the form with an explanation that my back and hips would bother me if I had to sit for long periods of time. It had sounded like the case was going to be a long one. I figured they would respond with a request for a doctor's statement or something and I was only thinking about that one time, but I received a postcard back saying I was permanently excused from duty. And, yes, I'm over 70 (there, I admitted it).

I feel it's my duty to do jury duty. It's everyone's duty unless they are REALLY unable to serve. However, I've been able to postpone it if I had travel plans. I found the California system to be very accommodating to my schedule. One time I was not chosen as a jurist because I support gun control. Another time I was excused because my significant other was the judge. It was pretty funny when he looked up from his computer and saw me in the jury box. But I had to go a different courtroom instead - no special treatment!

Hopefully it will not last as long as projected and you can get on the road quickly
