New ears and other stuff

Postby bluepinecones » Fri Jun 20, 2014 7:40 pm

My new hearing aids arrived and I spent couple hours with audiologist this afternoon getting acquainted with them. So far so good but it will take me a bit to get use to them and associated capabilities. This pair came with a streamer device and have managed to pair it with my near antique cell phone so it sends sound to both ears and I can answer/talk/hang up hands free. Apparently if I had a smart phone, I could download an app to make all sorts of adjustments to the hearing aids and other bluetooth capable devices. I somehow doubt that the TV in Magic is bluetooth capable but that would be nice.
Also have more chargers to keep up with - going to need a bigger box for travel.
Nicky likes the fact that I have already been able to lower the volume on TV at house even without bluetooth set up.
My old hearing aids were only about 5 years old; somehow I thought they should last longer than that; sure hope these do, but they only come with a 3 year warranty.
Looking forward to hearing the birds sing in the morning; have missed that a lot.

Swelling is still not going down from yesterdays sting. Thought it would be showing progress by now. One good sign however is that it did not spread up my arm; mostly confined to index finger and about half my hand. By the time I decided to give up and take the pain medicine last night it was too late to call doctor. I was shocked when I looked at what he had prescribed - a narcotic. Even tho it was very painful, a narcotic seemed like over kill and I am reluctant to take them. After that discovery, I stayed with the Aleve but did not get much sleep. I am going to start waiting longer periods between soaking in ice water this evening, otherwise I will never get ready for trip. Another encouraging sign is that blood pressure and heart rate have been coming back down most of the day so think I'm good to go even if not organized (wouldn't be first time far as lack of organization in escaping).

Nicky is all cleaned up and ready to go. Do need a better weather forecast so he can stay clean and we can enjoy some outside time; maybe even a campfire. Forecast is not for a total wash out but it appears there is a pretty high chance for rain all over the southeast most of the week.

You might try taking the meds by only taking half or quarter of pill at a time rather than the whole thing at once. Might help you sleep a bit better without getting you too messed up. I am very sensitive to meds and always break mine down at least in half. I occasionally take Xanax and break the tiny pills into quarters or even eights!

Glad your new hearing aids are working good! Enjoy the birds!
Have a good trip in spite of the weather!

So glad your hearing aids arrived and I hope your hand continues to heal and the pain subsides. Enjoy your trip, the weather after Monday looks at least cooler even if a bit of rain.

Sarah,
Glad to hear you got your new ears before heading out.
Hope your hand gets better - can't imaging trying to get ready for a trip with so much pain. Just focus on what's really important & let the rest fall where it may. Organized or not, the miles will help it all fade away (I hope ;) ).
Take care,

Thanks ladies.
May have to figure out how to turn the hearing aids volume down a bit. Sat on the porch for a little while and listened to the bugs singing tonight. Kind of frightening how many must be out there to make that much noise. Also startled myself at the sound of toilet flushing. Strange how long one can go without realizing sounds once familiar are no longer heard.

Thanks for the offer to help spend more $$$, Mitch. I think Nan earned the record for that when she helped me with "basics purchases" when I picked up Magic.

Bills paid and enough housework done not to have to come home to mess (been neglecting housework lately).

Make sure to check back in with the doctor if you get redness in a few days. I got stung by an unknown flying insect hanging my arm on window sill of car on Kauai on our first wedding anniversary. I had never reacted before, nor since, but that time it swelled and hurt and we went back to hotel and I iced it and I thought it would be fine( says the nurse Whois a bad patient like most nurses I know)! In a few days it began to get red and more swollen and I had developed an infection called cellulitis,a skin infection which has spread to deeper tissues. It did take antibiotics to get me on the mend. So just keep an eye on it and if you think it is changing for the worse, make sure you get it seen and treated. Most of the time those infections are easily treated, just don't let it get ahead of you. Get well quick.

Hi Sarah, Glad to hear that your new ears are giving you back lost sounds. Sorry your "bite" is still hurting, but happy to know that you can start your trip. Have fun. Peggy

Sarah it is so nice to hear the birds in the morning... we sure take things like flushing the toilet for granted!

That is incredibly wonderful news to hear, Sarah.
I'm so very happy for you!!!

We'll get that volume controlled through the app on your new Bought-In-Nashville smartphone...

Sarah so glad you got your new hearing aids in time for the trip. I imagine you are hearing all kinds of wonderful sounds that you didn't previously. Enjoy your trip and don't let Mitch spend all your money for you!

Great news on the hearing, Sarah. When I first got my new ones, my audiologist had me keep a diary of sorts about which sounds seemed too loud or interfered with hearing speech, etc. Then she was able to program the aids to optimize the hearing.

Don't be afraid to take the narcotic, at least at night, so you can sleep well. They are not addictive if used properly...for pain. Or, if you have an adverse reaction to the med, call and ask for an alternative.

Hope you have a great time on your trip, and Mitch's idea of a Smart phone is a good one. She does have good ideas.

Liz, my audiologist told me to keep a log also. I have another appointment with her in 3 weeks but can go back sooner if necessary.
Need some face to face human experience with them; both with and without background noise. Think Mitch can help me with that next week. So far just keeping up with house noise, TV and nature sounds in the back yard.

Glad your new ears came before your trip. If nearby campers get a bit too noisy ~ you can always turn down the volume
