Need Help - Things to see in Oklahoma

Postby JudyJB » Mon May 26, 2014 5:35 pm

I just realized that I really badly planned my trip through Oklahoma to Colorado, so I want to revise the whole thing. (Don't know what was in my mind when I planned to drive 384 miles on one day!)

Mostly I will be driving on I-40 from Fort Smith, through Oklahoma City, and possibly through Amarillo TX, before cutting up to Trinidad, Colorado where I plan to stay several days before going farther west in Colorado. I have five days to devote to Oklahoma, and will be entering the state in two days (Wednesday).

I like archeology, museums, historical sites, etc. Any suggestions for sights to see? It looks like there are a lot of campgrounds on the way, but I am also interested in any COE or state parks.

Thanks

I remember doing the "Cowboy Hall of Fame" when I was in OK City. I enjoyed it, and at that time they had a whole
room dedicated just to John Wayne. Its a museum but think you have to like cowboys to enjoy it. :D I love cowboys

I just googled it, it has a new name but here is the link

The Cherokee Living Museum is in Tahlequah on the eastern border. Don't know of anything off I-40; I usually avoid freeways.

I don't mind getting off the freeway and driving a few miles to something. Just wanted to let you know what my route was.

Originally, I was just driving through Oklahoma, but decided that was really dumb, so I am looking for things even if they are off my route a bit. I just checked out the Cherokee museum and think that is a place I will go to. Looks interesting!

Thanks, Sue. Nothing like the excellent construction of an RV in a tornedo! I already spent a couple of hours in the rest room in the middle of the night at Maumee Bay SP in Ohio, and I know Oklahoma can do better.

I was also going to suggest the cowboy hall of fame...went there several years ago and although my husband was more the
museum person than I am I did enjoy it
I didn't go see it but there is a memorial at the place where that bombing took place years ago

There are some nice COE parks up near Woodward and Fort Supply. Museums there too. I also liked Black Mesa SP in the panhandle. Nice COE park on Canton Lake NW of OK City.

We entered on 40 back in 08 and stayed at a really nice state park. I will ask hubby tomorrow if he remembers which one. It was off a road that was parallel to 40 several miles north of 40. Some windy roads going in but we made it fine in a 40 ft bus. Pretty lake/reservoir and full hook ups were reasonable as I recall. Only a couple of hours before OKC. In OKC the downtown memorial where the Murrah building once stood was impressive. We had a wonderful sandwich lunch at Toby Keitths restaurant. More tomorrow when I quiz the Okie himself.

Gilcrease museum in Tulsa has the largest collection of western art.

Claremore has the J.M. Davis Gun museum. Largest collection of guns in the world. Also the home of Will Rogers.

The Cherokees have the Cherokee National Museum at Tahlequah.

Tulsa has one of the top 5 Jewish museums in the world. The Sherwin Miller museum.

Jenks (near Tulsa) has a large Aquarium. Supposed to be pretty neat. Jenks is also one of those antique shopping towns. Main street is loaded with antiques shops.

Philbrook museum in Tulsa. It used to be the 72 room home of oilman Waite Phillips (Phillips 66 gas and oil).

The Tulsa Air and Space museum & Planetarium.

Thanks for all of your suggestions. Made it to OKlahoma, so one more state to add to my map, plus Arkansas from the past few days. Am going to the Cherokee Heritage Museum tomorrow. Got some good suggestions from the visitor center lady, as well. Might go to the Will Roger's home. As the visitor center lady pointed out, we really need someone like Will Rogers today!

I have been to the Will Rogers Memorial in Claremore. I wasn't impressed with it. It's kind of small and once you've seen it, well.....you've seen it. But you might love it. Haven't been to his home. It used to be an old abandoned house out near the lake but I think they moved it somewhere. Can't remember any details though.

There's a place in Bartlesville called Woolaroc. It's a really neat place. Google it. If you go to Claremore to see the Rogers Memorial Bartlesville isn't that far away.

There's also an outdoor museum, of sorts, called Har-Ber Village. It's a self guided tour. Very pretty area up on Grand Lake. Lots of antique stuff there. Life scenes from the early 1900's and stuff like that. Pretty different.

Bartlesville is where my husband and his sister were born! We have been there several times.
