Mostly Good News from Urologist

I had my urology appointment today and had a cystoscopy of my bladder. I also got the results of my blood work and cat scan from 10 days ago. Kidney function is good, and bladder and kidneys are all normal. My big fear was kidney cancer, so that is a relief!

The only bad news is that instead of the one large stone in my left kidney that I have had a few years, I now have two large stones. One is positioned so that it could easily move and block the ureter, which is an emergency situation, so he recommends I get it zapped. This will involve sedation so my son will have to take me to the hospital. They will also put in a stent from my kidney to my bladder, and leave it there for two weeks.

I will not find out until tomorrow when they can schedule this, but I am obviously going to have to reschedule some things. I want to get this done while I am in a place with hospitals and family--would be awful to have an emergency in some place like Death Valley. Depending on when they can do this, and during the two week period with the stent, I might take a few shorter trips and then come back here to Napa.

It's good that your tests came back good & you can get the other taken care of while you are there with family.

A few months ago my DH had a cystoscopy. They didn't find anything but caused a blockage in the ureter and had to put a stent for a couple of weeks. He said that was the most painful thing about the whole ordeal. He was afraid when they took out the stent that it would be painful but it wasn't. I guess after a couple of weeks with it, it was a relief to get it out. Hope you get along better with one.

I would sure stay close to the medical people and family until you get this taken care of.

Martha

Judy, glad for your good news but sorry you have to get any medical treatment at all. Have you seen these doctors before?

No, JoneE. I just picked them out of the book. I knew they were connected with the only hospital in Napa, and I checked to make sure they were board certified in urology. Ditto for the orthopedic surgeon I am seeing tomorrow. There is only one orthopedic group practice that does knee replacements in Napa, so I called and asked for whoever was best with problems after knee replacement. I wanted someone who dealt with replacements.

I am not looking forward to the stent because I also have known people who had a lot of pain and infections with one. I was pleased that they did give me a pre-antibiotic and one to take late tonight to reduce the chance of infection with the cystoscopy. So far, I am happy with this guy.

I won't go more than half a day's distance away. Would be thrilled if they could do it next week.

Judy, so glad the fears of what could have been were taken away. Sorry any treatment/surgery is needed, but glad you discovered this now and can get it taken care of near family - and hoping for you that it can be done sooner rather than later, just as you hope.

Hi Judy - I agree with everyone - glad the diagnosis is relatively good, and especially glad you are near your son instead of out boondocking and having an emergency happen. Sorry you still have to have a procedure / stent tho.
Sending big hugs.

Judy, I'm sorry you are having to go through this.
Everything will turn out A-okay, and you'll be back chasing your adventures in no time flat!
And just think - the government is back in business, so your choices won't be limited.

So sorry to hear you do have some problems that have to be solved, but it will be good to have it all taken care of and the possibilities of some serious problem when you want to boondock so far away from family, doesn't have a chance of happening. That thought doesn't bear thinking of. Doesn't sound like a fun time, but you do have family close and sounds like you've done all any of us could do, to make sure you have qualified drs. You're in my prayers and will be thinking of you, hoping all will be well VERY soon.

CArol :)
