Why I Still Teach

Today we went to the L.A. County Fair. The whole school. Along with probably 100 other whole schools. The Fair has a special program for schools where they can come in 3 hours before it opens to the general public. No rides, and none of the buildings where you can buy stuff were open. But there was still lots for them to see and do. And we saw and did lots!

These are sixth graders. They're part of a new program at one of our former elementary schools that is becoming a K-8 school, phasing in a new grade every year. The hope is that kids will have the opportunity to grow up "gently" while still receiving the same academic opportunities the middle schools offer. Frankly I think they've got a great deal! I don't know that kids who attend a traditional middle school -- especially boys! -- would take the risk and put on aprons & sunbonnets. They'd be too worried about getting pounded by the eighth graders for acting like sissies or girls. But these guys led the pack and had a marvelous time pretending to travel the Oregon Trail.

I feel fortunate to be part of this pioneering program in our District, even though the Superintendent and her minions aren't very supportive. It's the community that will keep it going, and maybe even see it spread to other elementary schools. It's the talk of the town. :D

Anyway, I wanted to share these because they're such happy pictures. They make me smile, and I hope they do the same for you.

Those smiles definitely prove they had a good time! How is the book situation going?

great pictures Laura, kids are having a marvelous time and learning while they have fun is so awesome. We have a couple of K-8
schools in our district, for many years and they are awesome. I've driven bus at both of them over the years and I found that the
students were better behaved and all treated each other with respect and looked after one another. Makes me :D Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for asking, Pat. Still don't have the workbooks I need. Just got an email from the book-ordering gal today saying that they've been ordered. Who knows when they'll arrive ...

I've given up hoping for support from the District. As far as they're concerned we just don't exist. I don't get it, and I'm tired of trying to figure it out. So I'll just focus on the kids and those smiles. They'll keep me going for a long time, in spite of the arrogant indifference of the administration (my Principal excluded -- she's a gem).

Nice photos and happy kids! How nice that they have the fair all to themselves for a few hours.

Love the smiling faces.....everyone looks like they are having a grand time at the fair.....
I've never cared for the concept of "middle school" as I believe it isolates those kids....Am a firm believer in the K-6 then 7-12 system or the K-8 then 9-12 system...gives the kids stability and something constant in their lives....like being part of a family....plus also the district only has to maintain 2 schools rather than 3....Oh, it's just too early to explain myself in more detail and am on my 1st cup of coffee, so the brain isn't functioning at full speed, yet.... But you get my drift... ;) It's a concept that worked for years before someone decided to do the "middle school" thing....glad it is coming back....Now, if we can only get the "powers to be" to realize that it's better for the kids.....just my 2 cents.... ;) :)
