I loved this tour, Liz, thanks. I remember doing a coal mine tour, and enjoyed yours, plus learning more and seeing it through your eyes.

Thanks for the tour, Liz.....Ernie's family is from the Beckley area....worked the mines thru his parents generation.....they all moved to the Gettysburg area after the closing of the mines in that area....then worked the shoe factories in PA....we've visited his uncle & aunt and some cousins who still live in the Beckley area....

Thanks for the pictures Liz. I always wanted to down in the mines when I was little but girls were not allowed as it was considered bad luck. The first woman to go below (at least where my Dad worked and maybe actually THE first in any, was Elenore Roosevelt. She visited the mines where he worked and wanted to go so guess you didn't say no to the Presidents wife. My Great Grandfather (below), Grandfather, Daddy and one brother were all coal miners. My brother thankfully for only about 15 years. When I was little the mines were frequently idle for several days a week which made for rather difficult times unless seasonal work could be found in the orchards. I remember my Daddy's bucket and there were three sections, occasionally he would leave a bite or two in it for me as it always had a very distinct taste that I liked after being in it all day. There wasn't a company store but most grocery stores ran credit accounts.

My Great Grandfather was, in addition to being a miner, a fairly notorious person during the troubled times in Williamson County.

Good morning Liz, Thanks for the coal mining tour. What a hard way to make a living. When I was camped at Guensey State Park in Wyoming I would see and HEAR trains of 125 cars(yes, I counted them) loaded with coal rumble by. Lots of coal being mined in Wyoming.

Great story and picture of your Great Grandfather, BJ. Thanks. The interpreters at the Coal Mine Exhibit were all connected in some way to the mines and mining towns, so made it more interesting with their personal stories.

It was Stony Fork Campground, a NF cg, not far from the intersection of I-77 and I-81.

Great tour Liz. Glad I went through your pics since I could never have gone into the mine with my claustrophobia.

I enjoyed your pictures of the mine. I couldn't take that tour either. I have been to Carlsbad Caverns twice and it didn't bother me but I couldn't go in that mine.
