Stoking the fire~~~

Got kicked out of my North Carolina CG this morning. Scrambled and headed up to the Blue Ridge Parkway in a Virginia. Booked a week at a KOA, but have a second week on hold just in case. Currently will probably head back to Camp Dads Driveway, but he's still in Florida and everthing is shut off in his house. For now, IL weather can still be iffy.

NC closed all parks and VA doesn't know what they're doing. Voice-mail at my first CG I was checking on, since I was supposed to move on Friday, said they were closed, but the second one said they are open. Not taking a chance. To bad, the NC CG was brand new as of February and only 6 of us out of 34(?) Sites.

That's it from me. I'm sure the BP spiked a bit this morning, but thankfully having had a high stress job, I know how to destress quickly.

Sheila, I'm sure we are all wondering what to do.

If anyone likes hot summers they can camp in my driveway.

I have an appointment to get my hair cut in the morning before they decide to close the beauty shops. The blood service is begging people to come give blood. If I don't forget I might go after my hair cut.

Now is an inconvenient time to have allergies. I don't know what oak trees drop but it's all over my yard. Sometimes it makes my nose run so got some allergy medicine. When I was looking some of the Benadryl packages said non-drowsy. I thought that's what I got but it wasn't. I took 2 yesterday and though I was going to have to stop and take a nap I was so sleepy.

Not an option Sheila. He's in a condo. Plus he's thinking he'll head back to IL in 2 weeks. Figures he can be alone better in IL than FL since he likes to putter around the yard.

I also suffer from allergies and the trees are starting to bloom. I take Zyrtek it works the best. If really bad I take Benadryl at night cause it makes me sleepy. If it has Diphenhydramine in it it will make you drowsy LOL

My doctor told me not to take anything with diphenhydramine due to studies connecting it with Alzheimer’s.

Here‘s a quote I found:
“Researchers have discovered a significant link between high use of anticholinergic drugs – including popular non-prescription sleep aids and the antihistamine Benadryl (diphenhydramine) – and increased risk of developing dementia and Alzheimer's disease in older people.”

With what my doctor told me and what I found online, all they had to do is mention dementia and Alzheimer’s and that was enough for me. Taking no chances.

I think they are talking about regular use of Benadryl. Not occasional use. We give it in the hospital all the time if needed. I only take it once in a while anyway so not very worried about that.

Even that quote says "high use". I don't take it but I'm sure what the doctor has me on now has it's problems, too. I'm really picky about meds, but capitulated on one med for my asthma. I always refuse steroids except one three day dosage when I had a full blown asthma attack. Now one thing I take has a very small amount of steroids.

Since Martha mentioned allergies and Karen mentioned Benadryl, I felt it would be good to know the facts about diphenhydramine. Personally I won’t take it. My dad had dementia, so any evidence that something can cause it - one dose or more- is enough for me to steer clear of it. We all make our own choices. I’ve never been one to take chances and I sure won’t with dementia and Alzheimer’s.

Sandi, I totally understand. There are several popular medications I won't take.

Thanks VERY MUCH for posting this, Sandi.

Your information about dementia and Alzheimer's perhaps offers an answer to a nagging question that I have had for many years. Two of my favorite dogs (of course, all of my dogs have been my "favorites" ;) ) - my sweet Rodrey James, and his Mom Cude Dog, had allergy problems of unspecified origin in their later years, particularly my Rod.

At my veterinarian's recommendation, I gave him a daily dose of generic Benedryl (diphenhydramine) suitable for his weight for probably the last two or three years of his life (also gave this medication to my Cude).

The last year or so of both their lives they both developed Canine Cognitive Dysfunction (if anyone is interested, Google it - most references state something like this: "Canine cognitive dysfunction (CCD) is the canine analog of human Alzheimer disease (AD)). [!!!]

The CCD started slowly - but noticably - and then accelerated until the end.

Dealing with CCD in my beloved dogs was truly terrible and awful.

My Big Joe has allergies also, particularly in the summer. I have given him diphenhydramine in the past. This stops NOW.

Although I am not aware of any studies linking CCD to diphenhydramine, and two dogs does does not a diagnosis make - I'm like you. Why chance it?

I only wish someone had told me this a long time ago.

Sandi, thank you for posting. You may have saved a life.

I did a bit more digging on the possible link between diphenhydramine and dementia.

Here is an article about the link in JAMA (Journal of the American Medical Association):

https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamainternalmedicine/fullarticle/2091745

Here is an article from the Harvard Medical School:

https://www.health.harvard.edu/blog/common-anticholinergic-drugs-like-benadryl-linked-increased-dementia-risk-201501287667

I am very surprised that these findings are not more commonly known.

I did not know this either. I have rarely taken Benedryl because it makes me so sleepy. But Alzheimers runs in my family on both sides so I do not want to increase my chances of getting it (I am already terribly forgetful!).

Nice to stir the coals Sheila :-)
Its typical summer in Arizona with its wildfires and all that. No rain in sight. I've been so busy with my garden and home improvements this year. I bouggt a kitchen cart that fits perfectly at the end of my table, im very happy woth it. Gives me extra countertop for my airfryer and lots more cabinet space. Put a new start battery in the motorhome and now i need to put in two new house batteries. Then its off to cummins for the repair on the generator. Hope i can get a little trip somewhere cool in between fires.
