Oh Tina, your comment brought back memories!

I lived in Minnesota (St. Paul) for 3 years when I was a kid, turning 16 while there. My mom was scared spitless to have me drive there (being from CA where people knew how to drive defensively), and made a deal with me. She said that she'd take me anywhere I wanted to go if I'd wait to get my license until we moved back to CA the next year. She made good on that promise, no matter what the weather was like -- as long as the plows didn't plow our driveway OR the street in.

And I remember watching cars doing 360s in the intersections after the first snowfall -- like they'd never driven in the stuff before! My dad's big treat was putting 2 wheels on the ridge of snow going down the middle of the street. He thought that was great fun. My mom … not so much.

We moved back to CA at the end of that school year and never looked back. Putting kids from Southern CA in that kind of environment was just … wrong.

 CA has it's own version called rain. After 3 or 4 months of no rain in LA it started to drizzle and all that road oil came up. There were cars and trucks sliding all over the place, a wreck every half mile. I was never so happy to be sitting high on 80,000# than that day. It would have been funny if not so much damage had been done.

It is true though that in bad weather and snow I'm often more worried about what someone might do around me than in my own skills. Sometimes the best plan is to stay put.

Boy Melissa, You can say that again!!! Rain is expected here in San Diego today...the roads will be a mess with all the accidents/fender benders. People are stupid to drive so fast in these conditions. lyn

So true, Melissa! I try to avoid freeways for a good 24 hours after a rain for that very reason. I'm sure we'll be seeing more than our share of fender benders today.

And yes, it's cold for this thin blood - 45* outside. But that's not stopping me from going to the big Harvest Festival Craft Faire. A turtleneck, sweatshirt, and my Gortex will do just fine, along with the heated seats in the VW.

You all stay safe and warm today!

even though I'm freezing for now, I just looked at the upcoming forecast and looks like its gonna warm up to the upper 60's by end of the week. Thank the lord, it will feel good to sit in the sun. :D But for now, I've got my heater going and I'm packing, sorting and repacking
stuff that could go to the rv that I won't need over this next month. Then when its time to move out I won't have such an overwhelming chore.

Speaking of thin blood. I read it takes the human body 1 week to adjust to the heat (tropics) and 3 weeks to adjust to the cold (winter). Popping north and south all winter long I never did adjust while I was driving long haul. Start the morning in the 50's or 60's and end the day in the 20's and vise versa.

My partner is from NC and we had her 2 teenage kids living with us. All they did was complain about how cold it was the 1st year. Around the 2nd or 3rd year, I came home from work in the middle of January to find the two greeting me without their coats on. I asked them if they were cold and they both replied no. It was 10 degrees out. We'd been coming off one of those weeks where the temps would drop below zero and stay there for a week or two. Both kids walked the 0.9 mile to school each day and thus had acclimated. I reminded them about their comments of never adjusting to the cold to some blank faces. :D

I'm not sure sitting in front of the fire will warm me up tonight...hands so cold and I'm inside the house...think I have the flu not what I wanted at all. all I know is I don't feel well and still hoping to leave on monday guess the road conditions will determine it
