I am sorry that you are dealing with this. It must be extremely hard with it being one of your children. Death and money can bring out the worse in some people. In the end do what will be best for you and be at peace.

Dawn, even if they don't HAVE to pay off those bills, they might be willing to do so from the proceeds anyway. A probate court would do that. Tell them not to bother checking, just do it.

Dawn, I am so sorry ... I think you never know someone until you see them go through a divorce or how they deal with death and inheritance. The latter often breaks families apart.

Rushing to closing and cutting big checks -- while expedient -- may be a rash move and not serve you. I know very well that in early grief it is easy to be stampeded into rash action. Closing is an artificial deadline -- and your buyer may wait. But even so ... please take a breath. Ask your realtor to take the buyer's temperature on a delay. Do as others here suggest and consult an attorney.

My heart goes out to you, Dawn. Early grief is a tender time. Take care of yourself first.

PS: as I understand it, you have to have be married to a former spouse for at least 10 years before you are eligible for SS survivor benefits at age 60.

Oh!I just read your signature -- schnauzers and a yorkie. Someone here at the park had a "snorkie." Sooooo cute!

Dawn, so sorry to read all this but want to encourage you in doing what you know is what you need to do for you. I like the suggestion that you have the credit card debts be taken directly out of the sale of the property.

My younger sister was nothing but a pain when my dad died and then 4 years later when my mom passed away. Ron's next sister older than him also caused lots of problems with the wills, living trust, etc...we barely speak to her now, just polite when we have to be together.

Hugs to you my friend.

Dawn - I can't empathize with what you're going through -- so far I've been fortunate not to have difficult family in my life, with really only one exception. However, I can feel your hurt and disappointment in your words and those are feelings we can all empathize with. You've been given a lot of wise advice here. I don't have anything to add, except to reiterate what Ali just wrote: do what you need to do for you. You have to come first now.

Oh Dawn! I missed this when it started and was so angry when I started reading this thread, but was actually laughing when I got to the end. How little these children of ours see beyond then end of their noses. As many have said before - What goes around comes around and usually does bite in the backside. You go girl!!!

Right now I'm glad we didn't have anything for the kids to want they want the 5th wheel go for it but don't forget to pay the bill!!!
It sounds like it will work out ok and over time I hope that you can mend the fences...some times we have to vent and this is a good place to do
so ...
We used to be better at not using names other than our own it's too easy to google and find what you have been posting...we have a forum
sister that rarely gets on who vented one night using her dd's name and dd's is still not talking to her very sad...perhaps we need to return
to using dd and ds and all that some just hate...I don't mind using my name you all know it but try really hard not to use my dd's or ds names
just a thought
good luck Dawn with your troubles right hopefully it will all work out for the best

under the circumstances i guess im glad i don't have any sibs to fight with. I just pray that i have some life left in me when my parents are gone to get to travel some w/ my new husband. Mom turns 90 tomorrow and daddy was 90 in june so i still have them both. God only knows how much longer i will have them.. but we will persevere until that day as we do one day at a time. They are still going strong,, but not strong enough that we can leave them overnight.

God bless you all and be with you all in your trials. Hoping they turn out for your good.
