Well, I'm gonna chime in.. I'm new to RVing too and haven't been out yet.. However, I have been collecting things for our lil rv. After reading alot of the posts here and some other places, I take the hints and tips that I feel will serve us on our trips. So, in my collecting I have an electric skillet, a crockpot, a small and medium pot. A small and medium skillet. Spatulas, whisk, eating untensils, etc. I will have a coffee pot as hubby and I both drink coffee in the mornings. I also have a two burner hot plate that I'm gonna put in.

I have noticed here that alot of you ladies have Corelle dinner plates... Can I ask why? I haven't gotten any dishes yet exept for some paper plates. Hubby suggested that we get a set of those hard plastic dishes..

Have a wonderful day........ J.

Corelle are light weight, durable, thin, easy to pack and come all sizes and several designs. (Especially if you live near a Corelle Outlet store!)They seem to wash up easily, also.
I ended up picking up some additional plates/bowls for the stick house.

Thanks for all the helpful hints. I'm brand new to RVing also; have had my rig less than two weeks and kitchen is still pretty much empty. Think I will have to store most cooking items outside as there is little space inside and it will probably be used for groceries. I do have one decent sized outside storage area, especially if I can figure out how to take better advantage of the vertical space.
Have spent so much already, hate to think of buying more but guess I'll start another shopping list after I double check what I have at home that might be useful.

Don't forget to check the "Gadgets & Gizmos" thread on here. There are lots of good items and ideas for the kitchen on there.

I found that the hard plastic plates scratch real easy and look crappy right away. Corell is the way to go. I just keep two of each piece and store the other half of the set.

I don't cook much, but for some reason, I love to shop for kitchen stuff! I could spend a whole day (and a lot of money) in a kitchen gadget shop!

Thanks Birdby Bird and BarbaraRose for the input about the Corelle and about the hard plastic stuff. Aren't they suppose to be hard to break as well? I have some extra stoneware plates that I was gonna use. I figured if the doors stay shut they should be ok. I'll keep an eye out for the Corelle. My coffee mugs for the RV are stoneware....

Goodness! How could I forget these babies?

http://www.amazon.com/OXO-Good-Grips-5- ... 289&sr=8-2

They are containers with a pop-up button in the lid which, when pressed down, seals the container. Love 'em, love 'em! Got them at T.J. Maxx, too, but the above is an Amazon link for them. Easy to clean the lid, which comes apart with no hassle. I use them for dry dog food, crackers, cereal, cookies, pasta . . . whatever! The uniform shape is great for storing them.

Did I mention that I love 'em?

Cheers!

Another reason for the corelle ware is that it is lighter weight than stoneware...we have it but use more paper plates that regular dishes because we boon docked a lot now that we are going to stop permanently will go back to real plates when my cache of paper is gone get more glasses as well I guess

I have beautiful handpainted pottery plates and bowls - two sets. I use a glass goblet wine glass. I get extra enjoyment using them that I would not get with paper plates or Corelle. I do use felt squares between them when I travel to prevent chipping and have never had a problem with anything falling out of a cabinet. In fact, when I am traveling, I leave several things right on top of my burners. The grate over the burners helps to keep them in place. Never a problem.

I have more trouble with my bathroom door opening than anything else.

I too have the Corelle dishes. My coffee cups are not a matching set. But are ones I've collected and kept. One of them I would have to very careful not to give to a lot of people as it would probably offend. It was a gag gift from a former BF and while he is long gone? I love the cup and it pretty much sums up my mood in the mornings until I've had about 3 cups of coffee! Silverware are the cheap ones from WalMart. But boy do I like them. They are heavy and best of all the suckers don't bend and twist!!!

My plastic ware for the most part is Rubber Maid and Steri-lite. They cost a whole lot less than Tupperware. And for sure easier to replace!!! They're square shaped and easy to stack and store in the cabinets. And fantastic in the small fridge as you don't lose any room like ya do with the round ones. My pots and pans are revere ware which I've had since '72' and love them. My cooking utensils??? I could sure stand to get rid of some of that clutter!

I have been full timing about 2 1/2 years now. I have resized, upsized, downsized and still not sure if what I have is what I want in the rig. I gave away my electric skillet as I use my propane a lot. I don't often use the crock pot, but I often do use the small George Forman grill. Have 3 different size pots, but none are large. One small skillet that I need to replace and a large one and a small square pancake skillet. I also have an electric grill and propane grill. I have corelle in a set of 4 saucers, plates and soup/salad bowls and 2 cups (for 3-2-1 cakes) a small 2 cup coffee pot and a coffee cup french press when I have no power. Set of 4 tableware, 4 or 5 spatulas, 2 pancake turners, a tong hand toaster, (I don't like toast much), several knives that I have moved to travel with the pots and pans in a drawer. Then I have a bunch of stuff that some of my friends figure that I don't need, but I haven't gotten there yet, need more time to figure that out.

For those of your traveling down the highway please be aware that if you are in an emergency stopping situation or get hit, stuff flies right up toward the front. In the recent accident involving Liz's rig, the stuff in the rig flew right up to the front and lodged different places. Had she had knives out on a magnetic holder they would have been in the front of the vehicle like a lot of the other things were.

The cabinet doors will fly open if you stop really hard and your things shift toward the doors and stuff will fly out. I had that happen in Bunkie. I have had the cloth dish drain slip off the stove top when I forgot to put it away. Another time, I had a glass ride on the table in total silence...thank goodness as it had Dr. Pepper in it. The thing is you don't really know what will stay and what will move so make sure you can live with whatever you leave out, flying thru the air toward you.

Excellent point, Birdie! I worked with some of the Ford health and safety guys on a course for drivers. One of their most emphatic points was the danger of loose items. They said that even an apple can cause serious injury in an accident.

They strongly recommended that all items, even briefcases, should be tied down with seatbelts or put in the trunk of a vehicle. So in a motorhome, they would tell us to not leave ANYTHING attached with magnets or even sitting in a sink because in an accident, it would become a dangerous flying object and could cause head injuries. So everything that is not soft like a throw pillow should go in a drawer or cabinet, or underneath in a storage area.

I guess even pet seatbelts would be a good idea.
