Update on this subject. Our refrigerator in the 5er wasn't working on electric but would work on propane. About 10 years ago we had the same problem with the refrig in the TT. We ran on propane for two years. One of the men (not an inmate) that I worked with had been a repairman for a RV dealer in Rapid City while he was in college. We were discussing it during lunch one day and he told me he had an idea as to what was wrong and came to our house. There are fuses behind the refrig. He replaced them and the refrigerator worked fine for another 4 years...then it died and Jim couldn't resurrect it. We had several power outages this summer because of high usage with the extreme heat. Friday night I mentioned to DH that I wondered if it had caused one of the fuses the blow. (I hate it when I have to dredge up information that has become hidden in the recesses of my brain!) Yesterday he took off the outside panel behind the refrigerator and replaced both the fuses and low and behold our refrig is working on electric...happy dance.
Neither of the fuses were blown but one of them was quite corroded on the end. Now I remember at the time Jim told me that many refrigerators in campers had been replaced only because of those two fuses were bad and since most people aren't aware of them they naturally assume that the refrigerator is finished....and some unreputable rv services will sell a new unit rather than replace a $2.00 fuse. BTW...I'm still cussing the state for promoting Jim and transferring him back to Rapid City!
So I'm sitting here hoping and praying that we're good for another 3-4 years. And if your unit starts cooling on propane but not electric or just stops cooling at all...try changing out those fuses. Ours aren't the little prong type ones that are needed in the panel inside the camper, but those little glass ones that a little over an inch long and about 1/4 inch in diameter.
Just so you know!
My mind works like lightning...one brilliant flash and it's gone.
