Who would've thought? Things to look for when buying RVs

So many of our choices have to do with our personal concept of "enough" space. and what we want to drive down the road miles after miles and what our pocket books can afford.

The pocket book variable is HUGE, in my experience.

When I began, I started out with a 10' pop-up that could be pulled by the car I owned at the time. It was perfect. As my needs AND finances changed I was able to move up to bigger trailers. Eventually I added a partner, and with our combined financial resources we were able to purchase a motorhome that neither of us could have afforded on our own.

For us, having an RV is a luxury. We have both agreed that we'll never full-time, but will hit the road for a couple of months at a time, always coming back to a home base. For those who are looking to make their permanent home mobile, choosing the right rig takes on a whole different meaning.

And Melissa -- while I don't like having a bathroom in my bedroom, I do like the option of having access to the bedroom to dress while not providing a show to anyone in the front of the rig. Ours can be closed off to make its own bath, or one door (into the bedroom) can be left open, allowing us easier access to changing. Kind of the best of both worlds.

We have two doors to the master bath. One to the bedroom and one to the hall. Modesty protected

When looking at RV's there are so many options (since we all have different tastes) and some options vary by class and naturally some come with a price point.

Remember with small size comes compromise but do it with the things that don't matter to you. Example: if you don't cook, don't waste space or money on a large kitchen. If you cook a lot outside, the outdoor kitchen might be an option. Some like to use the shower house, others allocate more RV space to a larger bathroom and shower.

Just have to be comfortable because it's the "little things" that drive you crazy.

While there are come functions that have to be performed like dumping tanks (tank size is also important) the majority of it is personal. If you boondock tank size is more important, both fresh and waste. Many little things keep popping in mind but I'm off to work.

Yep, Melissa, I would not want the split bath at all. And as Tina stated elegantly, we all like different things. Lots I couldn't do without my stool.

When I complained above about my shower, I'm small and it's a real big deal, but even I hit my elbows a few times before adjusting. And that's when I learned I'd really rather not have that door. It's major to change so I'm living with it.

I can tell I'm coming back tohynix thread over and over and will be making a checklist of items that make sense to me before we shop if we can get the old bus sold this next summer. So thanks all for your input here.

For those considering smaller rigs, be sure to take a look at ground clearance.

Yes to ground clearance!!!! The longer Class Cs like mine have a lot of real estate behind my rear wheels, so I have to be very careful on steep entrances and exits to parking lots. I hate the sound of the rear frame dragging, so I often have to drive around to a flatter entrance or exit.

I am parked right now next to a big Prevost that has what looks like less than 12" clearance on the side. I cannot imagine bumpy dirt campgrounds with that thing.

Judy when the big bus's start up as pressure in the air compressor builds the bus raises up to drive height. They are a good bit taller when fully aired for drive. It's a lot longer step up once aired up! I need a step stool once our bus is aired up but Prevosts ( pronounced Pray-voh) usually have automatic steps, while our vintage bus Mel has a step stool we put out until ready to leave.air ride in a bus is amazing. It's like riding in a huge limosine!

I posted a list a while back (and finally found it). It's a list of all the different types of amenities, etc . Sure helped me figure out what I wanted. Got everything on my wish list except for a motor & steering wheel.
