I was 10 and didn't know anything about it until my sister told me as we were getting off the school bus.

Good morning All,
I was living in Boston and working in the regional office of Marshall Fields when I heard the news. I was the youngest and newest employee and I didn't know what to do. After the initial shock, I think we all returned to work.
It is interesting to see how old we are compared to others. I was in my "gap" year, although I didn't know it at the time. I was just earning some money, so I could go to college. Enjoy today. Peggy

I was in 5th grade, too...was at recess after lunch....they let us stay on the play ground for while, then the whole school..(rural school of maybe 200 kids, 1st thru 6th grade no kidergarden back then.)...then we were all rounded up in the gym to wait for our buses and we had early dismissal.....another memory is....my Dad was a lineman for the local electric company and he had been out on a trouble call all day of the funeral, so when he got home, had some supper, he settled down in front of the TV to watch the replay of the funeral....well, my youngest sister who was 4 yrs. old was sitting on his lap and when she saw what was on the TV she looked at my Dad & Mom with a disgusted expression and said "Are the still hauling that body around? They've been doing that all day...." little ones can only take so much...and she had had enough.... ;)

I remember having like 3 channels. (not a lot of channel surfing back then, especially when you had to get up to change the channel. :o ) If the president or something important happened it was on ALL channels. No like today. 200 channels and nothing worth watching  I can truly understand the 4 year olds view point and thanks for the chuckle.

I do remember see the news about President Reagan being shot while on the naval base in Orlando FL and where I was on September 11th, so it's very generational as mentioned.

Almost forgot, thanks Mitch, I like you too ;)

Boy, you guys are really making me feel my age! I was an Air Traffic Controller in the Navy and was working in the tower at NAS Norfolk. We were told to notify all flights and get them on the ground as quickly as possible. That was a challenge and you could hear the tears in the pilot's voices as they responded and I am sure they could hear mine. It was definitely a day I won't forget!!

In 8th grade at one room school house in northern Cali; I remember standing on the porch watching storm clouds after a father came to school with the news.

I was in 7th grade. We were back in our classroom from noon hour. Mrs. Wick was reading “Cheaper By The Dozen” to the class. The principal came to the door and told us that President Kennedy had been shot. Mrs. Wick was crying and you could have heard a pin drop in the room. I remember looking around the room and seeing one girl with her desk top up and she was smirking….never did like that girl! As soon as they could round up the all the bus drivers school was dismissed and we didn’t return until the Monday after Thanksgiving. When the bus dropped my sister and me off early my dad and one of the hired men were in the yard. Dad asked us why we were home early and when we told him that President Kennedy had been killed. I’ll never forget the look on his face. He had met President Kennedy at the Oahe Dam dedication ceremony. The days to follow were extremely difficult for him.
My mind works like lightning...one brilliant flash and it's gone.

We were getting ready to leave Cleveland where we lived at the time and drive to NH to spend Thanksgiving with my husbands family. The phone did not work when I went to make a phone call so I called the operator and she told me the news. We drove all night listening to the radio and then watched Jack Ruby shoot Oswald on TV. I remember Pearl Harbor too as I'm old!!! lyn

I was pregnant with my daughter Melissa who was born in January. My mom told me and its as clear today as it was then. I still get teary when I see pictures of him and his family.

I was working for Bobby's campaign when he was shot. We had just been celebrating the win and all of a sudden the bottom dropped out. First year I didn't vote at all, just couldn't work up any interest in politics.

This is really revealing the various ages on this forum...I was at home with my 2 year old...I stayed glued to the TV for the entire time until they finally resumed other shows..I spent the day of funeral with my ironing board in front of the TV, while keeping an eye on my 2 year old whose only care was his Tonka toys...President Kennedy had just been to our small town one month before to dedicate Greers Ferry Dam..of course we're very proud to have shared in his brief history...My mother adored him and she kept the dress she wore to the dedication. She shook his hand and since she was a hairdresser she got to tell this a few times....

Karen, Sirhan was just transferred to Donavan prison near the border. He keeps asking to be paroled and they keep saying no. They better not let that creek out...lyn

We had just gotten into Sophmore English class in high school and there were a few rumors starting to float from students who had battery power transistor radios. Suddenly the overhead PA system crackled on and it was the principal. He said the President had been shot and killed. Soon after school was dismissed early and I spent the next few days in front of the tv watching all the coverage. I still get chills during replays when I hear the clip clop of the hooves of the horses in the cortège of the funeral. It was almost unbelievable that our President could or would be shot. And then there followed lists of how many things were similar between his shooting and that of Lincoln. I remember clearly standing at attention behind my chair in our den while watching the funeral procession. It just seemed the right thing to do for respect. Seven years later I joined the Navy and it was not lost on me that our slain President had also been a Navy officer.
