I agree with you Sharon...
When I had my hernia surgery the doctor said I was not leaving the hospital until I was pain free! I stayed in for 5 days then went to my daughters... he would have let me stay longer if needed... and he made sure I had a private room too!
Phyllis if she needs to stay longer ask the doctor to make it a written order! What on earth would she do way out in the country if she needed medical attention quick....
Sorry for the rant...
Kathleen

Thanks Phyllis for watching over her...

Thanks for the update and ditto on the pain meds! A little morphine is pretty good also.

Thanks for the update, Vickie.....and yet another wait time to endure for us all. Why, oh why, oh why, can they not look at a specimen under a microscope immediately and tell what's up with the lymph nodes???? I do not, simply do NOT see why they could not do that, and then, while the patient is still open, remove more tissue if needed. Using a microscope is a piece of cake any 4th grader could do. I can't believe they need to "grow" or "culture" anything for a week before analyzing the tissue. Waits like this are actually much more stressful and agonizing than most procedures, I have determined, at least in my own cases. Perhaps they need to hire thousands more analyzers so the waits can be eliminated-----faster healing and more mouths fed with more jobs provided. Sigh.

But, anyway, of course we are all hoping for clear results and a speedy recovery for Mitch. Thank heavens the surgery went well and Mitch is awake and cognitive and might actually go home tomorrow! Many fewer germs at one's own home, and the familiarity of one's own surroundings have been known to speed recovery. It took them many years to realize this, and now they are acting on it. Thank heavens for Phyllis for being able to be there so she can go home. I hope they send her with a satchel full of all sorts of pain pills and heavy-duty drugs of all sorts! A sip of wine and a few licks from Abby won't hurt, either!

I'm not usually a wine drinker, but I do believe I have a bag in my refrigerator that I may open and have a toast to Mitch right now! Stay in touch as best as possible, but get lots of rest and recoup!

Soos, Here is the reason it takes a few days to evaluate the lymph s removed during surgery.

They remove the axillary sentinel lymph node because it is the first lymph node under the arm (axilla) to which breast cancer cells will spread from the primary tumor location in the breast.

During surgery, a radiotracer and/or dye is first injected into the breast. After allowing time for it to travel to the axillary sentinel lymph node, the surgeon removes the lymph node.

A pathologist will then analyze the sentinel lymph node to determine whether cancer has spread to it. They will also evaluate the immune system, the structure of the lymph and if there is any infection (cultures). This takes several days. If cancer has spread to the sentinel lymph node, they will likely remove the remaining lymph nodes. If cancer has not spread to the sentinel lymph node, no more nodes are removed.

Prior to this concept of a sentinel lymph node biopsy, surgeons needed to remove all of the lymph nodes in the axilla and the risk of developing lymphedema was much greater.

This happened to my friend and she was hospitalized again. Not fun. Let's pray and hope Mitch is all clear from any further invasive surgery. Thank you, Vickie, for the update.

I caught the update on FB earlier in the day. Red, thanks for explaining the procedures. It helps to understand.

Hey, did any of us think to ask Phyllie for a picture of the handsome and talented surgeon? Mitch definitely needs to be watched while under the influence. I can hear her responses from here.....

I just talked to Phyllie via text. Mitch was able to get out of bed for a bit with help from a nurse. She is in some pain, but mostly when she tries to lay on her side. Phyllie is at home with Abby for the evening & will be back to the hospital tomorrow. I asked if the doc would see Mitch this evening & she said she didn't think so because he said he'd see her tomorrow around noon. He will probably let her know at that time if she will be released then.

Thank you so much for the updates Vickie. This forum and especially Mitch are so lucky to have you. You are a wonderful women. And Mitch is also lucky to have such a great a friend in Phyllis as well.

Hopes and prayers going out that the tests will come back negative and she can go on to full recovery. But I too think that 24 hours is kind of a short time before going home.

Vicki - thanks for the Mitch update - never had the pleasure to meet her (yet).

Mitch when you read this - I've been thinking about you too & am sending the softest hugs in your direction. Don't wanna squeeze too tight while you're healing. :P
