Maybe we need a "can I vent" section

Postby HorizonSeeker » Thu Feb 14, 2013 8:53 pm

You know this place is so wonderful for venting frustrations. I am so frustrated with cigarettes and their costs. I lost both my parents to lung cancer - both heavy smokers. My beautiful sister in law in Georgia who just went through a double bypass has now learned that she still needs a bypass in her right leg to save it and a pacemaker. She also was a heavy smoker even after being diagnosed with diabetes 15 years ago. Now my baby brother, who has smoked for 30 years (and still does) is in the hospital where he had to have a heart cath and his lungs scraped. He has something called pleurodesis. If you have the stomach for it here's a link to the video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DhRXLZuKors

I have never been a smoke and thank God for that because it must be a terriblee addiction because some of the strongest people I know can't put them down. Even now when the price is so high. Don't know yet what the biopsy will show from Ronnie's surgery, but we all know the cause. I just wish there was an effective way to rid the world of them. If we made cigarettes illegal smokes would go underground to buy them.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarg!! Ok, I feel better now. Thanks for listening.

I agree we need a section for venting. It really does help to get it out. I know how you feel. Most of my family were smokers and most are dead now from related illnesses. I'm lucky. The crowd I was with were not smokers, therefore I am not a smoker. Than God.

I have often thought about a 'vent' catagory - some days it is just needed. And no one has to read it, but the ventee (sp) will feel better. :)

My brother just had a scare with polyps on his vocal chords. Last I heard he had quit smoking. I know it is hard tho I never smoked except once in awhile at a party with a drink. My sister also smokes.

I think that is a great idea!

Might have to be a pretty big section because once I get started....! :x

Do you all really think you want a specific room for venting? I'm in favor of venting, but think they fit in whatever room they are for. I mean we have a room to give bad and good reviews for services and that would hold more weight in complaining about problems and it's almost never used. And we have this room and any other we can vent in... But again, if you want a vent room, I'll make it. So chime in.

Sometimes venting isn't about services, just other things like people, traffic and bad situations.

I was mesmerized watching the video...I was prepping for college to become a nurse...had two young children and a nonsupportive husband so decided it would probably mean the end of my marriage and the end of my schooling too but if I had known then as they say....I'm sure my dad's smoking led to his early forties fatal heart attack...He saw me, my younger and older brother have our 2, 10, and 13th birthday's but my mother was pregnant with my youngest brother who looks so much like him. If he could see the struggles my mother had raising us alone he would have thrown that last pack of cigarettes into the river and never looked back.
I have two precious friends who just can't put them down. I told both of them I truly felt if I hadn't quit 35 years ago I wouldn't have survived the pneumonia I just had..Isn't it strange how in our country we make cigarettes available to anyone who can rake up the 5 dollar bill (oh yeah, I know all about the age requirement, big deal)...I do question why God gave us this plant but he will give us the answer someday.
I like the idea of venting, of course we do quite alot of it but I think some of us hold back thinking we will be labeled as a complainer..

Risking being on the other side of the table (yet again!), I don't see need for separate 'venting' category.

I kind of like people venting at the campfire or starting a new thread. Venting is such a part of life, you know?

One of the things that's nice here is that people are kind about labeling posts and threads as "vents" or "rants" -- I know right away that sympathetic listening is the order of the day!

I started smoking in college. When I was expecting my older son I was given a March of Dimes brochure on birth defects. I quit immediately. My dad had been a long time smoker and went into the hospital when I was 16 with pneumonia. Half of one of his lungs collapsed. He never smoked again after he got out of the hospital. It's a shame it takes something like that to make you quit. My DH was a smoker when we married. When our son was about 2 he got into an ashtray and ate some butts. We thought he would have to have his stomach pumped. My DH switched to the chewing tobacco. That isn't any better than smoking. He finally quit but has spent thousands trying to save his teeth. In the last few years he has been treated for bladder cancer several times. The first thing they told him was it was caused by tobacco. I feel like that if he hadn't quit smoking 30 years ago he wouldn't be here today.

I could just shake my sister. She can't carry on a conversation without having a coughing fit. One of my sons uses chewing tobacco. I told him I hope he has enough money to save his teeth.

The governor wants to put more taxes on cigarets. Since I don't smoke I would be in favor of that only if the money went to the health care system and not into the politicians pockets.

Agreed. Just start a new thread with whatever you're venting about. And not to worry about hijacking a thread, we do it all of the time. Sometimes it's kind of fun to see where a thread goes...A thread on dumping once ended up about cooking...which if you stop and think about it is the end result for dumping.

Yes, I think the connection between the two was made while discussing Vickie's cooking...

I don't see a need for a thread for this purpose. We have places that rants and ravings fit in , threads we can write whatever we choose. I doubt I would ever read a thread just for this, no funny chat in it, would not be my cup of tea. I avoid all reasons and happenings as much as possible so I don't fall into a slump. If one thread only held unhappy things for Sistah' s., Sorry I could not read it, and would continue mentioning my bad days or bad times probably in Morning Thread.

Hopefully none of us have that many post we could classify for such a thread ..

My two cents,
CArol :)
