Visa and Mastercard

Ladies, everyone with a Visa or MasterCard, credit OR debit - check your accounts!

As you may have heard this past weekend something having to do with those two cards being hacked. I do not use credit cards but do have several debit cards, so I'm safe, right? NOT

Went to PT this a.m., pulled out the same card I have been using..."declined" -twice even!!

Off to the credit union when I finished PT, credit union says yep, your card has been frozen OK, I'll bite "why?"
Seems there was a questionable on line purchase made Sun.evening, the card company tried to contact me but couldn't, so they froze the account.

The credit union apologized profusely, but I explained how trilled I was that they were keeping an eye on this junk going on and probably saved me a lot more grief.

So the old card is in a billion pieces and a new one on the way.

Go check your accounts just to be safe.

Thanks for the heads-up, I just checked my debit card and so far,so good. I'm glad they froze your account as fast as they did.

Let me suggest you keep checking daily...it's gonna take those bastards a while to run through all the cards they hacked.
Grrrrrrrrrr...(I've had mine "stolen" twice...won't happen again (I hope)).

Change your password often. Make it a tough one (mixed case, numbers, punctuation...)

Supposedly the cc companies that are involved (and the specific cards involved) are supposed to be notifying their customers. Although who can expect that to happen? Good post - and something to be aware of. The good news - is we aren't liable for the charges, if they happen.

All is well in my little corner of SoCal. I do get e-mail notification of any charges on credit cards over 100 bucks so that helps, but not on the debit. Thanks for the info, Vickie! I'll keep checking tho just to be on the safe side.

All is well with mine. They also call me if any unusual activity takes place.
While I had them on the phone I asked what my interest rate was.
It's been 7 years since I got the card and I pay it off each month so I had forgotten.

LeRoy got caught in this mess. He had just requested a new debit card from his small town bank since his would expire while we are in Alaska. They sent a letter with a new PIN but with a phone number he could call to change it if he wanted. He called the number and they had no record of the card. He called the bank and, sure enough, it had to do with the hacking. They say all is well now with his account.

Well they got me! Checked my email first thing this morning as usual and there was 4 charges made to itunes to the itune of 300.00 bucks. Called BofA and have a new card coming. You're right Mitch, what a PITA! No more free books from BandN for a week, darn it! Plus have to go online and change the places that keep my card on file. Have to say that automatic alert thingy from online banking is a great thing! Caught it while the charges were still pending.

Sharon, sorry for the inconvience but glad you caught it.
I find that using Quicken software is helpful as every morning I download any activity to all my financial accounts; checking, savings, CC and my accounts with Edward Jones. (great tool if you are like me and hate balancing your checkbook manually )!

Thanks for the alert....Like Sharon I bank with BofA & I will definitely check my accounts out. I never use my Debit card except to make deposits at their ATMs...so don't know if that's a card I have to worry about. As far as online purchases I use the BofA Shopsafe feature they offer at no charge. It's connected to the BofA Visa card but my real card account number is never used online. If you use the Shopsafe feature you pay with a separate different account number (which BofA provides) to whatever website you're buying from and you post only the amount needed for that purchase (so you're in control of your $$$$)...I use it all the time when I'm buying anything online....I think there are other banks that provide this type of service/protection for their customers....just thought I'd share that info....
