Free prescription glasses

Postby longdog2 » Wed Jun 15, 2011 9:47 pm

A friend of mine just posted this on her Facebook page for free prescription glasses. You just pay the shipping & handling. Check out the website http://fabulesslyfrugal.com/2011/06/free-glasses.html. They have a date and starting time for when you can order them. Just thought it might help out someone who is a little short right now.

Another place on-line where I ordered my glasses is called 39dollarglasses.com and they have a great selection of frames. I am very happy with my glasses I bought there!

Barbie, and any others who have bought glasses from websites like these - do you wear yours full time? As in, you need them to see? Just wondering if that makes a difference. lol

I've kind of wondered the same thing. Every time I've had new glasses, they have to be fitted to my face and the focus
point measured, etc. How do you get around that part when you order online?

They tell you how to measure for the focus thing. I wear mine full time and have had them for over a year now and they are really nice and comfy. I only had to bring them in to a eye glasses shop to get the bows adjusted around my ears and they didn't charge me.

I need to get a new prescription or would be trying this today! It's time for me to get one, so will hope they do this somewhat regularly!

Speaking of needing new glasses...mine broke this morning! I have the rimless kind and the frame broke off the lense (I am really hard on my glasses, constantly taking them off and putting them on). Luckily, I have a pair of sunglasses (from the same place) so I can get by with driving with those (altho night driving might be a challenge! ).
I tried to do the free glasses thing, but you have to be a Facebook member to get into it, which I am not. So I went back to 39dollarglasses.com and ordered a new pair (ones with full metal frame) and paid extra for shipping to get them tomorrow.

I liked them (as necessary) on FB and then posted and asked if they'd be doing it again - they replied they would be - to keep my eyes out for the info - should be next week again. Not sure if I'll see an eye dr and have a prescription by then, but you never know. I do need new glasses. And I know the size of mine.

For those concerned about the sizing - look at the glasses you have - somewhere on the inside of the frame, it should say the size yours are. And you can get adjustments made at just about any optometrist shop - I've had my nose pieces replaced (free) twice. Walmart wanted to charge and didn't have the kind mine use - so I went on down to a fancy opthamologists office in the town I was in and they had the right ones and did it free. Walmart only was charging for the pieces and I would have had to install them - but think for that I'll stick with the fancier offices :)

I did fine without glasses today since I don't wear them when I work (near-sighted) but driving home in the dark with sunglasses on was a little bit of a challenge. The headlights were darker but luckily there are reflective tabs on the roads where the yellow and white lines are so I could see them fine.

The only problem with ordering glasses on line is not seeing what they look like on me first. But I don't like most glasses on me anyways, so I guess it doesn't matter. I don't like glasses that are too noticable. I have a small face so I need small glasses :D Hopefully, I will get them soon!

I went on the 39 dollar site and bifocals started at $79, still a pretty good deal. My regular eye dr doesn't charge for many adjustments and small repairs either but I have been buying all my family's glasses there for more than 10 years. Even paying a small fee for that would be cheaper than buying glasses from them though. I have a medical savings account that I can use to get reimbursed for out of pocket expenses like this - wonder if these internet companies would qualify for that? Do they send you a receipt? If so, that should work.

No matter what I was going to do, it was going to cost me money - but I needed new glasses, so just ordered some from 39dollarglasses. Will let eveyone know how it goes. It's still costing me in the $140's - but the lowest price I could get at Walmart and locally was close to $190 for the same things (with a much cheaper lens - so actually for the same thing I'm saving about $70 or so dollars). Free shipping and 100% guarantee - so worst case scenario, I end up returning them and spending more later. I didn't take expedited shipping so figure I should get them in the next week or so.

I decided my new frames are too big for my face, so I ordered a new pair that are rimless like my other ones were but these are much smaller, so should work out better for me. Also ordered the Transition lenses that get dark in the sun. I will send the other pair back when I get the new ones, which will be Monday according to UPS.
The first time I used 39dollarglasses.com, I sent them a pair of frames I already had and they made new lenses to fit them for me. Cost a little more but I loved those frames and wanted to use them again. They did a nice job.

It is $39 for a basic pair of glasses. Rimless costs a little more, bifocals cost more, transitions lenses cost more, etc. But it is still a lot less than a regular vision store. The ones I just got were $39. The new ones I just ordered to replace those (full refund of the first pair, no questions asked) cost a $150 because they are rimless and have the transition lenses, but it would have cost over $250 for the same thing at Lenscrafters, etc.

I hate to be a wet blanket, but I hope you all took a look at the various sites that review this $39 glasses place. In a nutshell, it's not pretty. I think this is a case of "you get what you pay for".

Good luck, Beth.
