Why I'm better off without TV

Postby Bethers » Sun Apr 04, 2010 7:14 pm

Well, I remember when things went digital they said I'd need a new antenna. I never got one and never put this one up after that. Got here on Wednesday. On Friday night after seeing people with their antennas up, I thought, it'd be nice to watch the news, etc occasionally. So I decided to give it a try. Well, it worked and some of the stations I get are even digital. So they didn't know beans when they said these OLD antennas wouldn't work.

But what does that mean I've been doing? Last night I watched back-to-back episodes of Law and Order. And put the news on for the weather. Discovered I do better with weather reports on line - just like I do better for news online - so don't need the tv for that. But today? Let's see - I've watched a movie, then an hour long tv show, and another tv show on public tv - and now am watching Amazing Race when I intended to be updating my blog. I'm being a SLUG. LOL - But it's one reason I think I'm better off without tv.

Yes, for the long time I was in Port Aransas I not only had TV, but had lots of cable stations. But I was rarely in my rv to watch. So, I guess I'm going to have to make myself appointments (at least in my mind) to not turn that dang tv on and watch all the junk. It's addicting. Really addicting. Never ever allow me to get satellite tv. I do NOT need it but if I had it, so many hours would be wasted at it.

But, right now, this is really a good thing - as I needed this down time. So, back to Amazing Race - and then whatever else I find tonight :)

After pulling into my campsite Friday, I realized that I have NO TV signal (buried in a valley). I wasn't sure what to do with myself. If the weather had been nice it wouldn't have been a problem, but I was stuck inside with NO TV. I'm having little fits thinking about how nice it would be to watch Law and Order right now...

I suppose it's a sign that I need to get some homework done, but I don't wanna. :( I want to sit here and stare at the magic box that has the magic pictures.

yea, little cuties those cowboys are :D
no cable here either, I watch whatever comes over free airwaves, and
mostly that is channel 5, oh, I mean CBS. I used to be addicted to tv
many years ago but that was back in the day when shows were really
fun and funny to watch. Although I'll admit I enjoy Survivor, Amazing
Race and Undercover Boss, hmm never thought I was into reality tv
but I guess the truth is the truth. But I do enjoy CSI and NCIS. I go
on spells with the news, if a bunch of bad stuff happens alot I get
depressed and keep the news off until I feel ok. I'd have to say one
of the big things I miss from cable tv is watching the weather channel.
They had some great shows about weather and natural earth stuff.
Ok, back to Amazing Race

Amy, I've probably been close to a year without tv more than a couple nights. I always can find something to do - course, I love to read, so do a lot of that.

But, yes, Ava, I like the reality shows. And just saw those cowboys for the first time tonight! Yep, they sure are cute.

Thought I would chime in here. We decided to turn our satellite off while we are working/traveling with the carnival. One thing it did for us was save us $60 a month and right now that is a good thing. We have been without TV now since 3/21 and so far things are going well. We were not sure how much free time we would have and that was our motivation to not bringing the satellite with us. We do have some DVD movies that we brought and we have watched a few of them. We also have our Wii with us and so use the TV for that.

I think it has been good for us to be without a TV as we spent a lot of wasted time and usually stayed up later than we should have ~ now we are spending time reading and talking ~ that's always a good thing for us.

Just my two cents worth.

I don't watch TV either. My computer has taken its place. I check the weather and news each morning online. When I have time, I like to read forums and research places to travel. I find I don't even miss it.

Your new photo is much better than last one.

In case you didn't notice on the way into the park, there is a major TV station not far down the road from you. Also think several of the stations in the valley have their antennas up there. That and just being on the mountain is probably helping with the reception.
If you can get the National Geographic channel, they are running a series called "Drain the Oceans" - very interesting.
The only major handicap in life is a bad attitude!

I watch too much TV when I'm home in FL....tv in almost every room. But don't watch it at all while traveling...and don't miss it, except maybe the news if something's happening.

I use the TV like others listen to music. I turn it on but don't sit and watch, until the evening. Well, I do watch the news as I do computer time in the AM. I'm not a music listener. It gets on my nerves, kinda like sitting in an elevator all day in my own house. Don't know why that is, as I do like music, just not constant.
The Amazing Race is one of my favorites and YES I, too, love the cowboys! They are just too adorable!
I also watch Survivor, haven't missed one yet.
Dancing With the Stars just isn't the same this time around for me, nor is American Idol.
I use to read allot but not so much any more. I'd be lost without a TV in my MH. I found that out the first time I camped, in the rain, and had to stay inside without a TV signal. I only had my iPhone to listen to music and I have Kindle books on it to read, and did read a bit, but that about drove me nuts. Nope, need a boob tube in my life. ;)

I don't have a t.v. in my rig. There was a time or two I missed it in my two months traveling alone this past winter. But I think I probably would be happier with a laptop instead of the tv. I read a lot. When traveling , Maggie and I, take a lot of long walks to investigate the park or area where we are and then get ready for bed, and read a wee bit and off to sleep. (I sleep better in the r.v. then I do at home). So really no time for it, and rainy or real cold days is about the only time I might turn it on. I don't watch it much at home. In the evenings I might turn it on,, but if I don't find a good movie, I will turn it off and read or sometimes play card games on here until I feel like going to bed. This week-end was a reading good time out on my back deck. Read two very good books and got a little sun, not much, I love my deck and it was a wonderful way to spend my birthday. Beautiful relaxing time.

Last week I did watch some of the Law and Order shows, now i do like them and that Mark Harmon, is not bad on the eyes either  There has been a time past , like Lenora, I turned the t.v. on in the mornings and never set down, just had it on for the talking. Couldn't listen to music on the radio for years, after George died. Have turned it on some lately, when I am outside working though now. My likes and dislikes don't stay the same , they change from time to time. I try not to let myself get into any ruts. So right now, I am not into t.v's, but in a couple of months, who knows !!! They were a nice invention though, for those of us who live alone, and its great we can choose to watch or not to watch.

Good topic, Beth, give us an idea of likes and dislikes of some of our Sistahs on here. Nice way to know each other better.

Those cowboys are so cute.
I watch way too much TV when I am home. I also like NCIS and CSI. I used to watch a lot of daytime TV after I retired. Now, the TV doesn't come on until the news in the evening. When I am traveling, (20,000 miles in 2 1/2 years) I don't watch TV. I'm an avid reader of just about anything I can get my hands on. Also, don't give me a map, I'll spend hours looking at all the places I can go.

I watch too much tv but most of the time it's just on and no one is watching. A lot of times I put it on the Weather Channel and that will play over and over. My son says we are sick. lol I don't like all the Entertainment type shows with all the gossip. I don't care what Tiger Woods is doing. I usually mute the sound and it might stay like that for a couple of hours. We have Direct TV but I never have gotten into watching movies. I never know when one I would want to see is playing and I don't want to watch the last half of a movie and spend a month trying to find it playing again. If we didn't have the premium package because my DH has to watch the bull riding we wouldn't even have the movie channels. I like having a tv in my motorhome. I like to watch the local news and weather if I can. I bring a receiver with me from home but can't get local stations on satellite.

No TV for me in Austin and not in my van either. At home in CA, I won't replace my current old
TV when it dies. I can watch a movie on my laptop if I want . We didn't have a TV when my DD was growing up. Finally got one for the summer Olympics in '84 because she was a gymnast. Now she doesn't have a TV either! I never miss it here in TX or traveling, too much to do...reading,
sewing, sketching, surfing the web, writing my blog, knitting, more reading. That's just evening stuff, during the day I am seldom in the house. Except now, when I am eating my lunch! ;)

If I'm home and awake, my TV is on. I'm not always watching it, in fact sometimes I have to stop what I'm doing and figure out what the heck is on. There are some shows I really like to watch - NCIS (love Tony DiNozzo) re-runs of Law & Order Criminal Intent, Ghost Hunters & Desperation Truth - As far as reality shows go, I watch RuPaul's Drag race & Project Runway. I like HGTV and usually enjoy whatever is on that channel -
I'm a TV lover and am not ashamed !! HA !
