new @$^**%$# computer

Postby retiredhappy » Tue Oct 27, 2009 6:07 pm

Okay, I broke down and bought a new Acer computer with Windows 7. The computer came with Vista and I paid a guy to replace it with Windows 7 and to move all my stuff from my old computer to my new one. Well the install of Windowsl7 went fine (I swear this new computer had more keys than the old one) BUT the transfer of stuff didn't go so well. He's more of a programmer than a user. I finally found on Windows 7 a program that walks you step-by-step thru on how to move your stuff which he didn't apparently know about as he was trying to do it a program at a time and of course, some of my old stuff won't work on Windows 7. GRRRRRR!!!!! I also had to get a new internet access card from Verizon cause the new puter doesn't have a "card" slot only USB ports. I now have a built-in camera if I can only figure out how to use it. And I seem to have my pictures in two places so haven't tried Photobucket yet.

Okay, that was easy. Windows 7 has a new feature called "Snap". It makes it eaqsier to have two windows open at the same time. The keys on the new computer are slicker than my old ones and I can't seem to keep my fingers on the "home" keys thus the extyra letters. I WILL CONQUER THIS NEW COMPUTER. Just don't anyone walk by my window in case it comes flying out the wiondow.

Stay mentally strong, Karen. You can do it. In a short while, you'll wonder how you ever had trouble with it!! HONEST.

You made me smile reading this, Karen! Good for you for grabbing your buns & jumping into a new OS! You can work out the bugs & then coach those of us who are waiting for ... whatever ... to move over.

I know what you mean about being able to feel the home keys. I really count on them and when I'm on a different keyboard that doesn't have them as pronounced it can be quite a challenge to type accurately.

Have fun! ;)

Then there are those of the hunt and peck system......non typists that managed to make it through school without a typing class... Hey I thought those chemistry and math classes would be useful at the time! Lets not talk about not finding the home keys......my iBook is 5 years old and I have managed to wear the letters off several key keys......So, okay I do sort of know where the keys are but.....this may force me to learn the keyboard......the worn/missing keys are the n a s d e and c is looking a little shaky ..... :)

Oh, Karen, you just posted the main reason I'm dragging my feet in getting a new computer. I dread having to transfer everything, especially my financial Quicken program, as it's a bear in and of itself!! :o
On a happier note! Congrats on the new 'puter. Which Acer did you get? Someone else on the forum just got an Acer. They seem to be quite popular. Keep us posted on how the learning curve goes. Take deep breaths!

BirdyBird: add K and L to that for me!

There are home keys? Being a two-finger typer, I didn't know that. One finger on left side & one on right side has always worked for me. See? No extra letters.

Awwww...sorry Karen. New computers are supposed to be fun! But thanks for the warning though, I'll be ducking when I pass by your windows! lol Enjoy it! It'll get easier the more you get used to it. :)

My daughter was provided an Acer laptop for her work. She loves it and it's about two years old now and has given her no problems.

Re: transferring files... i'd use a flash drive and do it a few at a time rather than try to move everything. I know I have stuff in my computer that can either be burned off onto a cd/dvd, or deleted because it's no longer relevant. Housecleaning! I'm almost ready to get a new laptop myself. I'll be anxious to see how you like your Acer as time goes by.

When I got sick of transferring all my files to a new computer, I bought a USB external hard drive. I save ALL my files from both computers to it (we have a wireless network) So, if I ever get another computer, the files are there.

Now, transferring the apps is another story. That's a royal PITA - where are the original discs - where's the registration code - is it gonna work with a new operating system - drivers for external hardware - and on and on. Grrrrrrr....with PnP, it's all supposed to go without a hitch. Rarely does.

But eventually, you'll get there and it'll be just ducky!

Happy Wednesday morning, btw!

Thanks for everyone's support. Its getting better and I love the Acer. Windows 7 has a great program under "Getting Started" that walks you thru step-by-step on transferring your stuff either using a transfer cord or a USB flashdrive (which I used). If you have some older programs or games they probably won't work on the new OS. When a program needs a new driver to open, Windows 7 asks if you want it to go online and find the driver. The system really is great, its just that I've used XP for so long and I'm at that age when making changes is HARD, HARD, HARD but I also WON'T let some $%&*(*&^%# machine defeat me. I did try to clean up my old stuff BEFORE transferring but somehow ended up with my pictures in three places.

I just got a new laptop with Windows 7 and I'm liking it. The keys are obviously in the same place, but they feel different so I keep hitting the wrong ones and it's going to take a little time to get used to the changes, but I like it. I'm glad you mentioned the snip feature, I hadn't found that yet - I'll have to try it later
Good luck !!!

Gee, Karen. I thought you were going to wait until the bugs were out of Windows 7. Good luck. I'm glad you seem to like the new computer.

Not to hijack this thread, but Trudy, how's the job going and are you all settled into your new apartment? Enquiring minds want to know!

I'm pretty much settled in to my new apartment and I really like it here - nice and roomy and pretty quiet.
My job is OK, it's a job ! It's hard to get used to standing for many hours a day, but I have some great shoes that help allot. I enjoy seeing all the cute dogs that come in with their owners so that's a big plus, my co-workers are OK too, not allot of time to chat but they all seem friendly.
All in all, things are going well - thanks for asking.
