Gold seekers leaving Skagway for the Yukon in1898 had to carry 1200 pounds of supplies up Chilcoot Pass before they were allowed into Canada.

What a treat to take a tour of a part of the Yukon, thanks to Liz and her dialog! It sounds as if the group has separated again, to pursue different routes. It worries me that Beth came face-to-face with a grizzly bear----am very thankful that the bear decided to just walk away. Grizzlies are not like our black bears in this neck of the country, and they are one critter I have always been very wary of. PLEASE ladies be careful on your little walks to get better views of something and to see more of something. The pictures are wonderful, Liz----I truly can't help but wonder how long it takes you to get them off to us. I know what a time-consuming venture it is to just do a few little pics, let alone a travel brochure! Once again, I feel so honored to be a part of this trek to the top of the country.

Did your windshield break because of twisting of your RV on the the rough road, or because of something hitting it? Are most of the roads dirt? That one is paved, I see, but perhaps has washouts along the way? All so interesting to see firsthand with you!

Life is about learning to dance in the rain
Happy travels!

Soos, parts of the road are gravel due to repairs of frost heaves. A stone flew up when a truck passed me. Doesn't have to be a truck, though...Beth got a ding too from a passing car I think. So has Bob and Tommy and Olga. A common hazard, I guess. We will be traveling on several miles of gravel roads from Dawson to Chicken, AK....we'll just havr to go slow and wish for the best.

Bears: Make noise while hiking. Sing, whistle anything as bears are mostly shy and will avoid humans. And remember, just because you can't see the bear doesn't mean they aren't watching you! :o

Really enjoying your pictures, Liz. Quite a few of them are ones that I have in my album, so you're bringing back memories!
I'm always looking for sand dunes and was amazed to find those in the Yukon. Even found some in Wyoming with Fernie and Irene.

Liz great pictures you are seeing so much more of the interior of Alaska than you do on the cruises. But geeee hope beth is a bit careful when it comes to the bears, don't want her to be eaten by one. Be safe out there you are truly in the wild. Keep those pictures coming we are all enjoying your adventure with you.

How many RV's did you count at the Wal-Mart in WhiteHorse? When we were there we stayed at the Pioneer RV Park. The Pioneer was PACKED with the Fantasy groups so we stayed above it in the Boondocking section FREE and had plenty for elbow room for the RV's plus we got satellite service up there. We counted 37 RV's staying at the Wal-Mart in Whitehorse!!! Good grief! LOL

I'll try to answer some of the questions - and make comments on some of the comments.

First, I was probably about 15 feet from the bear. We all (Peaches, me, bear) froze for a second. I reached down to pick up Peaches and the bear ran into the forest. He/she was as scared of us as we were. Actually, I wasn't scared - was mad that I didn't have my camera. Had the bear headed towards me - then I would have been scared.

Next - a comment - making noise doesn't scare off a bear. Peaches and I were not quietly walking in the campground. The sound of us didn't bother the bear at all - was the sight that did it. Yesterday, while in Chicken, AK, I saw a sign - that made me laugh even tho I'd read it before. I can't remember the exact wording - but it talked about buying bells to wear in bear country - and how they are working - now, when they go out and look for bear poop, they know they are finding the right poop cuz of all the bells in it. Hahaha - yep, it's a joke.

OK, rv's at Walmart? I didn't count, but the parking lot had a lot when we got there and more and more kept coming in. Considering we were 4 of the rv's you can just imagine!

Liz and Carol went a different direction from me today. And I have an email from Ron that he and Olga and Tommy are splitting for the moment, also. So, our 5 rigs are all spread out. At least 3 of us will be back together in Denali - and I plan to meet up with Liz and Carol before that.

I'm working hard trying to get my blog updated to-date tonight, but might not be able to - have a slow connection. Going to try, though.

That said, if you enjoy the pics Liz showed of the animals, I believe I have more on the blog. Those were done the other night.
