Surgery done

Postby MandysMom » Thu Oct 02, 2014 2:55 am

Hubby had repair of the small place in his mouth graft which had never closed so has a few visible sutures in the roof of his mouth. They also cut some scar tissue and tried unsuccessfully to stretch his mouth. Would not move so conclusion is its contracture from radiation. They could not work on back of throat to try to keep food from going back up into nose but hopefully having the leak sealed in palate it will help. It was a long day, surgery did not start until nearly 5. He went into OR at 4 but they had trouble intubating him because of his jaw and tightness in his throat from scarring from radiation. The anesthesiologist was great as Mel said he remembers the doctor saying good night, listening to them talk then next he knew he was in recovery. We left for home around 7:30. He fixed himself a chocolate smoothie with kale and drank the whole thing. He is waiting til he can take more Tylenol then off to dreamland. Glad this is over.

I'm glad it's over for you too. Praying the surgery will help with his eating issues.

I've been thinking about you, Velda, with hopes your hubby can start eating solid foods again. Take care of yourself, too.

Glad that's done and sending healing thoughts that this last surgery at least can help hubby to eat normally.

Thanks everyone. He is up this morning, and fixed his personal concoction of blended drink, but of course says his throat is very sore. Time will heal that. He already notices improvement in having the little hole in the back of the graft closed. Late next week we see our dentist as to possible partial plate to replace the lost 3 teeth. It will be tricky because of his tight jaw. But our dentist is very good. Plan to keep it a quiet day and weekend. I have ingredients for a spaghetti sauce in a big batch so we can use some and freeze to make meals simple while he heals. Even found gluten free spaghetti noodles for me.

I know you both are glad the surgery is over. Hope it helps with his eating. My DH's biggest complaint was his jaw and throat after surgery. He is still hoarse.
