Anyone Order The New Kindle?

Postby etexlady » Wed Oct 02, 2013 8:12 am

I ordered the new Kindle Paperwhite announced September 3rd and it is due to be delivered today. I'm excited to get it with all the new bells and whistles. It's not my first Kindle. The first one was my "Oprah" Kindle. I bought it when I saw her gushing about them on her show and Amazon offered a $50 off deal. I passed it on to my S-I-L who declared she would never use one as she preferred to hold a "real" book in her hands. But, she did try it and loves the Kindle now. Anyone else on the watch for delivery of a new Kindle?

I still have the original version and the Fire. I do remember waiting with my nose pressed against the glass though. Kindle froze the other night and I thought he was a goner  but he came back to life a few hours later. :D Hope yours arrives quickly.

I pre ordered for my 80 year old mom, who also said she preffered a "real" book, until she saw my little kobo mini and fell in love with the concept. The only thing that upsets me about the kindles is their "special offers", meaning they take up space on your device with ads unless you pay extra for them not to-the main reason I went with kobo myself years back. I will likely get the new paperwhite for myself as well, once I see how my moms is. I love that they finally caught on to the need for a better backlight! My nook glo has a distracting ring of light around it, and the paperwhite seems to have dealt with that issue. Do let us know how you like it, please!

I had the very first Kindle reader that came out. It was wonderful for what it was, then. Now it seems so archaic. I have since went to the iPad. Had the Kindle app on it but then really didn't need it as iPad has their own book store. Is the Kindle Fire like the iPad? I have never looked at one. What are some of the features? Hope you love it!

Lenora, it's a pad of it's own - as is the Nook HD and Nook HD+. But your IPad will most likely have more features than it.

I have two Nooks (including the HD+ and one of the basic ones) but also have two laptops and another pad from someone else. Have discovered I prefer reading on the original Nook (but would like the backlighting it doesn't have) or my basic pad - as they are the lightest.

I'm sure you'll love the Paperwhite. But if you got the bigger one - maybe not as much so. I'm still kicking myself for going with the 9" HD+ over the 7" HD when I did that - not as comfortable for me in bed. However, if you want to use it for movies and videos, the 9" will be better.

They are both e-readers. The Kindle is made by Amazon. The Nook is made by Barnes & Noble. I have both apps on my generic pad - and usually read books I get from Kindle on my phone. I actually have discovered I really like the little light weight phone to read in bed. I love my original Nook, also for that.

Thought I'd dislike using e-readers over books - learned quickly I like them better.

Donna, if you are patient, maybe one of the ladies from the GTG will keep you company while you go visit a Walmart or a Best Buy...just to look. If you look the different models over, you might get an idea of which direction your preferences and budget lead you.

Our just take your self over for a look see...but then there is no one to pull you away from an impulse buy.....

A friend gave me her old Kindle when she switched to the Ipad. I used it for a year but then bought a Nook reader and the Nook tablet HD+. Love the little reader but did not like the tablet so returned it. When I upgraded from my Iphone to a Samsung, I got a special price to include their tablet. Love it too. Also have a computer.

So now I use my Kindle app on my tablet or computer and my BN account on my Nook reader.

PS to Tina's post. I like to go where several brands are sold like Best Buy. I always ask the sales person to tell me what they prefer and why. Sometimes their answer gives you more insight as to uses you didn't consider or exactly what they like is what you can't stand.

I sometimes do "shopping" of places. Had to do one for an office supply place (which will remain unnamed) and was shopping the Kindle. I had to laugh - as I shopped three of their locations and part of my scenario was to say I was upgrading from a basic Nook. All 3 stores recommended after hearing that that I stay with the Nook - as they are so similar and my books would move over from one to the other.

It was great to hear them talk about both, so I agree to listen ... but remember, sometimes they are supposed to push one over the other ... no matter what you say.

Like you, Joan, I probably should have returned the HD+ - it's simply not getting the use ... but it's really nice if someone wants those bells and whistles - and same would go for the equivalent one in the Kindles.

I still have my old Kindle Fire and love it. I will wait to upgrade until I damage it like I did the original Kindle or it dies.

I think the best part of having an e-reader is that you can get books without having to have a physical address to have them shipped to. They also save weight and storage space in an RV. My kids bought me the original and I was not sure I would like it, but I now keep it next to my bed and read every night. Like the backlighting for reading in the dark.

I'm still using my original Kindle! Archaic, yes, but it will handle 90% of the texts I want to read on it.

The thing I like best about ereaders is the storage space. Inadequate library shelving has been the bane of my existence -- along with the weight of my backpack or briefcase when filled with books (as it always is). :D

I use calibre to change text from one format to another as needed. I only wish it stripped out DRM code too!

We have used the Kindle apps on phones (Droid Maxx) and lap top, as well as the Kindle Fire. I just wanted something to read a book on outside. My folks have a Nook and its the same can't seen the screen issue in daylight. The Kindle paper white was the easiest for me to read outside in the daylight as well as at night. Its not overly large and being able to adjust font size was a big help (eyes just don't work like they use too 8-) ). When our Kindle fire died (bad charging connection) we bought a Kindle Fire HD but it won't run Java and so some websites we liked for the GB would not run. So we returned the Fire HD for a 2nd paper white and now we can both sit outside and read. Local computer shop repaired the original Kindle Fire we had and so we use it for the GB to play games on and she has books that will themselves read to her and highlight the words as it reads.

I have a hard time reading any screen in direct sunlight other than the paper white screen. Not to mention the battery life on paper white is like 8 days or some ridiculous amount. Even in its case the paper white will slip in my back pocket like a paperback novel. (Just have to remember not to sit on it :o )

Not to mention its pretty cool to finish a book at midnight, realize its a series and just order and start reading the next book in a matter of minutes. :D

I left my older KIndle next to my bed and then stepped on it, hence had to get the Fire, but I really like the backlighting. I put a basket on a shelf I have next to my bed now so it won't slide off and I won't step on it!!

An excellent point is that being able to enlarge the type really helps those of us who have vision problems.
