New Credit card

Postby Excel » Sat Mar 09, 2013 1:53 pm

Just got a notice from Bof A that my old Visa credit card will no longer be useable and to activate the new card enclosed. The new card has the 'chip' in it. Of course they include a little info page about how advantageous the new card is, especially when traveling out of the U.S. Well, I called BofA & told them I wasn't interested in the new chipped card & wanted to keep my old card as is. Guess what...your choice is .... accept the new chipped card or close your acct. I am shocked. I charge everything on my Visa in order to get the cash back bonuses & pay the full balance each month.....I just am bewildered that I & I guess all Visa users are being forced into this new card. So now I guess I'll have to wrap the darned thing in foil to be safe....or carry cash to pay for everything....I hate to be bullied but don't know if there are any alternatives....Any input would be appreciated..... :x

My confuser is acting up right now, but I googled "how to disable a credit card chip?" and lots of things, including videos popped up. I couldn't access them right now, so give it a try and see if it can help you out.

They have cheap holders for the cards. And if you don't want that, you can get fairly inexpensive credit card wallets that block anything. It's pretty easy to protect yourself.

wonder if the other banks are going for that too, now I see a reason to purchase those metal credit card holders.

Or just put aluminum foil in your wallet or purse. Works very well :P

We have a B of A Visa and haven't heard from them yet. I just transferred a monthly payment to that card which is a pain it the butt to do. Hope I don't have to do it again.

I'm expecting all of them to do it.

And the aluminum foil can't just be IN the purse, has to be around the card. (Or you could line the purse with it :) ) Easier for me to spend the couple bucks for the sleeves, and always keep them in it. Amazing myself saying that, as I'm the original cheapskate lol.

I did consider getting a case for them, and maybe one day, but like the sleeves for now.

Can't believe they would force you to accept the chipped card. Chase replaced mine for me.

Chip and pin cards are much safer than the ones we currently use. They require a four digit pin, just as your debit card does, and are the norm in Europe and the rest of the world because they are much less likely to be useful when stolen. No worries about someone scanning it because only you will know your pin, so no need for foil or special covers.

In fact, I have been pestering to have my credit union offer chip and pin cards. If you travel abroad, and want to pay for something with an American credit card, they have to manually type in the number and ask you for ID before they will accept it.

Chip and pin cards reduce fraud and are less worrisome when lost or stolen. U.S. banks have been slow to adopt this technology because it is more expensive and requires merchants to buy new equipment to use it. It may take a while before merchants start asking for your pin, but it will be coming eventually because it is a world standard for fraud prevention.

Is this card with the chip different from the RFD cards or the same? I think I remember with RFD cards your card could be read by someone nearby which is why people have gotten the sleeves or special wallets. So my question is are they the same or two different things? Anybody know?

I did not read the article, but my debit card requires a PIN to be used but someone used it at a Western Union to the tune of $850 and didn't even have my card. So they are getting around having to use a card and a PIN some how.

About a month or so ago one of the men in the park I live in was telling how someone was able to get his information and use his card
and Thursday and Friday I was told by two friends that their cards were declined when called the bank/credit union was informed that one card was being used in Conn at the same time it was being used in Yuma (the friend was in Yuma) so they disabled the card the other one was being used in CA and although we are close the town was further away so again it was disabled. Makes one wonder how safe it is to use the cards I normally don't go in to the web site daily but think I will now...I have a new card coming mine is due to expire soon it's so easy for the cards to be scanned somehow we who don't do stuff like that can't understand how it is being done..but it is a worry
