In fact, I have been pestering to have my credit union offer chip and pin cards. If you travel abroad, and want to pay for something with an American credit card, they have to manually type in the number and ask you for ID before they will accept it.
Chip and pin cards reduce fraud and are less worrisome when lost or stolen. U.S. banks have been slow to adopt this technology because it is more expensive and requires merchants to buy new equipment to use it. It may take a while before merchants start asking for your pin, but it will be coming eventually because it is a world standard for fraud prevention.
