Remi's turn at the lake

Postby BirdbyBird » Thu Jul 21, 2011 7:21 pm

Herschel said that I would have to post since he didn't go out in the kayak with the GHL I did. I'm kind of new at this but I'll try. Herschel said he could proof it for me if I needed him to.

So....up at the crack of dawn, I figured something was a foot when the GHL got the little red life jacket out. SHe doesn't make the Herschel wear one but I don't think she trusts my swimming ability much. So anyways, off into the morining mists and fog we go.

Image

We headed down the lake in a different direction than what the Big Red Dog did yesterday. I heard some rumbling that sounded a little scary like thunder  ....thunder is really not my friend.....but the GHL said that it was only trucks crossing the bridge above me. Now how was I suppose to know that? :?

Image

We traveled past a dock and a lot of boats. Really big boats! :)

Image

Image

I looked into some of the small coves and asked her again about alligators. I remember being warned and warned about water and alligators in FL and GA and AL.....you get the idea. So I said that looks like a good place for a 'gator. But no, she promised NO 'gators.

Image

This is me watching for 'gators.......sometimes to the left....

Image

Sometimes to the right. I mean it has been a few years since she was here, maybe things changed.

Image

Wait, what's that? Oh, she called that a log 'gator. She said with the high water there were a lot of log 'gators (sort of like tire 'gators on the highway only in the water :) ) She said that they wouldn't get us but might attack some of those fast speed boats if the drivers aren't careful.

Image

Okay, I finally settled down about the 'gators but there were spooky looking "Things" on those rock walls..... :?

Image

Image

Image

I told Herschel I wasn't even scared :) ....well maybe just a little but if you don't tell him he won't know. I made it sound all brave when I got back. 8-) There was that once we both were looking a a strange log looking thing, but then the GHL saw that it actually WAS looking back at us. It was an otter, poking his head out of the water to get a better look at us. He really was right there. We saw him twice but I guess he was very shy like me because he didn't wait around for his picture.

Image

On our paddle back we stayed on the side of the lake with the "boat parking" They were all sizes.....small, medium and large.

Image

They called this one Scrappy but I didn't think scrappy meant HUGE.... :?

Image

This one on the other paw, seems to have an appropriate name.

Image

As you can notice in some of the BIG boat pictures....the sun had finally come out. Apparently it was suppose to be my job to remind the GHL to turn around and try to get back before the sun burned off all of the fog. But we kept seeing those interesting things down the lake....anyway, we both paid for it 'cause about half way back the sun came out and the HEAT came on. I was a really smart guy and drank water from the little plastic sack she brought for me but the heat really started bothering me so the GHL lifted me out and just had me swim for a few seconds next to the kayak and lifted me back in. I can see now why Herschel likes the water. I was a lot more comfortable after I got wet. And I didn't think I would ever say that :o  The GHL could have stopped near the dock and walked back to camp or even gotten out and jumped in the water but she was just too stubborn. We made it back and about two hours later there was a thunderstorm that finally cooled everything off. When the storm came through I jumped up on the bed in the RV so the boomies couldn't get me and pretty soon Herschel volunteered to jump up too, just so I would feel better. :) I love my Big Red Dog....... The GHL really wasn't much use during the storm. She just kept reading or watching out the window as the storm moved across the lake and the hills....

Oh, and both H and I got bathed in the lake in afternoon. Actually, I liked it better than being sprayed and rinsed at home. Maybe I could get used to some of this water stuff.

So, that is my "tail" for the day's adventures. The kayaks are both packed up, H and I are clean and we are ready to roll out of here tomorrow. Hope I did okay. "Herschel, are you ready to come over here and read this?" "What do you mean you need your rest?" So, I guess I'm on my own......hope you like it!

Aw, you did great, Remi! I loved the way you watched out for gators and other gator look-alikes. Glad you and Herschel and the GHL had such a good time.

Remi, I love your last picture. My son said that would be his look if I took him kayaking. We have Otters here too but the poor things are about as road smart as a Squirrel.

I'm sooooooo very proud of you, Remi. You're really becoming a brave boy! Have a fun, safe trip tomorrow, maybe, just maybe you'll end up at a very special place where you can find some more water to try out!

YAY, Remi! My mother was saying she hopes that maybe you can teach me to like the water the next time we meet-----UNH-UNH! I don't even like getting my toenails wet when I try to get a drink from a lake or a pond! She has put me in more than once to show me that I can, indeed, swim, if I have to, however! And I love going out in the canoe and paddleboat. I love your pictures!
