Birding for Real Questions

OK, I've got this job coming up in Okefenokee and as I look at the websites in the area I see lots of birding action. I have always been intrigued by the birds and can spot the ones I know for around my home area. But how do I go about starting a real birding log? What equipment do you suggest? Looking forward to this as another benefit of the job.

Books are covered in the online site. But I use about 5 or 6 general guide books and then a bunch of specific guide books, e.g. sparrows, gulls, shorebirds, hawks, warblers and etc. I can give you the specific names if you want them.
