Money Pit

Postby Orchid » Sat Jun 25, 2011 8:27 pm

I should have named my RV the Money Pit instead of the Greenhouse. During our wet spring I found a leak in a roof seam. Lucky I did as I found out that when the original roof was repaired several years ago, the wrong adhesive was used. My whole roof was in danger of coming off especially if I'd gotten on the road in a bit of wind. Unexpected expense number one. Friday I took my RV into town for new tires, a planned expense, only to discover I need three new brakes, two down to the rotors, one just needs new pads. Again not planned. I haven't heard yet what the estimate on this will be.
I did ask if it would be ok to drive to the camping site next week as planned. Since it's mostly rural driving and not a lot of stop and go, I should be ok. It's always something.
I also tell myself it's better to get all these things done before I leave for the SW this fall. Cheryl

Those are some ugly bummers, Cheryl...but you're right, better to get them fixed while you're still at home. Then you can head into your adventures with confidence! Good luck on the total being not worth a 2nd mortgage!! :(

Dear Chery

Welcome to the RV World! I have also referred to mine as a money pit; but mine's new so it's not repairs. It's things like hoses, regulators, etc. Then there's the stuff that Mitch made me buy like the electric meter thingee (to avoid blowing out the electrical system) or the heavy duty extension cord she forced me to purchase after I managed to melt the one i started with. Gosh, now that I think about it, Mitch has made me buy all sorts of things. :o

Seriously, tho, so much of this stuff, including tires, brakes, and new roofs, are only bought every so many years. All are good investments that will pay long-term dividends despite the short-term pain... When you get on the road, the dent in the pocketbook won't matter at all...or at least that's what I tell myself as I order some other collapsible thingee for the RV kitchen! Amazon is my best friend these days!!

I hope the sticker shock isn't shocking at all for you...

Sounds like Mitch may be a very useful but expensive friend! I'm glad there are "sister angels" looking out for us newbies! :) :) Cheryl

Mitch, you may be cheap with your own money, but you've been quite liberal helping me spend mine! LOL :o :o :o

Flick, it's always way more fun to spend someone else's money. The moaning and groaning as the balance dips is one sided as well.    Linda

Man, you sleepin' ? Here I thought I left a perfect opening for "cheap", as in "trashy"...but no one bit. I'm disappointed.

Hi Cherly, so nice to have you back with us, hope you'll join in more, you have been missed.

I had a visual picture when you were describing the fact that in a high wind your r.v. roof could have just sailed off. What a castrophe that would have been for you and anyone behind you. I never realized that something like that could ever happen. Now, I will probably have this thought anytime I am traveling behind another r.v. on the road, :P

Hope the bill isn't too bad, so lucky you found all these problems before hitting the road and away from familiar territory where you knew who to go to for repairs.

Safe and Happy travels, after you get everything fixed

Only because I was out of town and didn't see it until tonite.

Cheryl, I've often thought rv's are mis-named. They should be in the Jeep catagory.

Sorry to hear about your RV problems. Now that they are repaired, you will be traveling down the highway safely.
