Where's Liz? So Many Birds

Postby Liz » Mon Apr 04, 2011 7:28 am

I'm seeing so many different birds here that I gave them their own blog post. I think I have the IDs correct, but I've thought that before and been wrong, so feel free to set me right.

Liz, you do realize that you have altered my travel plans...I simply must see the plethora of birds and other wildlife so prolific in Florida...my beloved kayak trips in the wildlife and wetland reserves of Eastern Washington and Oregon where I see and hear glorious sights and sounds of these wetland creatures now pale in comparison to what is offered in Florida...not sure I would be comfortable in an inflatable kayak with alligators; I am one of those people that if there was going to be an unprovoked attack and vicious mauling by a ninety foot alligator I would be the one. The photos I have seen from you and Beth are such a pleasure...thank you. Kathy

Love the bird photos. Florida has such a variety of interesting birds.

Kathy, if you want to see a lot of birds without a kayak (lots easier and drier) visit the Audabon Society Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary just northeast of Naples. It is at http://www.corkscrew.audubon.org/

There is a nice cafe and gift shop with lots of books on birds. There is a two-mile boardwalk, but you can cut across so you only walk about 1/2 of it, if distance is too much. You can also rent binoculars, and there are volunteer naturalists on the boardwalk who will help you identify birds and other wildlife. If you go early in the morning, it is quietest and you will see the most birds. They are so used to visitors, they don't fly away. Wear rubber-soled shoes.

This is one of the few places in florida where you can see a wild cypress forest and marsh. You will see adult and baby alligators and turtles, as well. If you are lucky you will see deer and rare panthers. The swamp is very beautiful with all sorts of huge ferns and orchids, also.

Your photos reminded me that I need to get back there soon. 25 years ago, my kids and I saw thousands of wood storks nesting there, but unfortunately they have moved the boardwalk and close parts of it now when they nest. It was amazing with the tops of the bald cypress trees filled with huge nests of very noisy birds.

I've always enjoyed listening and seeing birds, especially in Spring time when they seem so happy. But not being a real bird person , who knows names etc. I wondered what in the world would be interesting about a blog of just birds. Well, Liz, that was one of the most interesting tours, I have been on. The different shots you got of those birds and your narrative, was just right, I thoroughly enjoyed. If all you ladies, keep posting all these pictures of birds, I may really know some of the names of them too :o

I noticed that Li, has not been hear to make her comment about that last picture, what a great ending and interesting. What are those camels doing in McIntosh?

Great bird shots, Liz! Thank heavens for digital photography for retirees, eh? Imagine what developing 35 mm film would be costing! Your spot is certainly a haven for winged critters!
