Managing Bookmarks?

Postby mtngal » Tue Mar 22, 2011 1:57 pm

Does anyone use an online method to manage bookmarks?

I got up this morning to the dreaded 'blue screen' on my laptop and had a moment of panic before I got it booted up again. Lucky for me because I have not exported a file of my bookmarks for a couple years. :(

And that got me to thinking about switching to an online method......?????????

what I've done over the years is to export a copy of my bookmarks into an email that I mail to myself and then I keep
the email. Works for me very well. Never heard of an online method.

I use "My Yahoo" for email, bookmarks, contacts, calendar, etc. Since they are online (also FREE), I can get to them from ANY computer. Also, if I decide to change Internet providers, nothing in My Yahoo account is affected. Another nice feature which is fairly new is that you can have other email accounts feed into your My Yahoo page. So my google email (which I have because I use Google Picasa for picture and Google Reader as a consolidated location for all the blogs I follow) also shows in a tab right next to my yahoo mail. Highly recommend both My Yahoo, Google Picasa, and Google Reader---all free.

I use Yahoo for email, contacts, bookmarks, etc. And for all the reasons Colleen (longdog2) stated.

I did some research on Google including their Gadgets and didn't find anything like bookmarks but I could be missing it.

You should back-up all your important files (way more important than bookmarks) regularly - whether to an online service, or best (IMO) to an external hard drive of some sort regularly - monthly is good. If you get in the habit, and backup your bookmarks to it also, you'll always have them fairly current.

Me, when I get a new computer, I start them over - with a file with the old ones so I can go find one if I have to - but I learn that I end up with tons of bookmarks - most I quit using at some point. I need to spend time and clean them out occasionally - but never seem to do that.

I pretty much do as Beth does. Most of my bookmarks that are important are to me are to my bank or utilities which are easy enough to find again. Any other ones that I want to keep, like blog addresses, I save to a file on my desktop. I then back up all my desktop files and any software programs (Quicken Money etc), to an external hard drive.

A few weeks ago Sophie jumped up and hit the hand I was holding my wine in and it spilled on my computer. I blew it with canned air, turned it up-side-down and removed the DVD drive. Next morning took it to my computer guy. Turns out my Toshiba has a piece of plastic under keyboard so motherboard wasn't fried BUT I now have a couple of sticky keys. Bought a small, used notebook and had everything copied from Laptop to notebook JUST IN CASE. Kind of nice having the notebook to take with me in my purse. I do love my gadgets. I also have all my important files on a flashdrive which I keep in my little safe.

I retired from the government last year so "back-up" was a constant mantra beat into us. I still back up. Last year I did a several month trip in the RV. Had my new laptop along and had all my contacts, bookmarks, etc loaded onto a flashdrive ready to roll. I do a monthly newsletter for a professional organization so I also had several back issues loaded on the flashdrive. Managed to get the newest version of Microsoft Office Professional with the Publisher feature all loaded up onto the new laptop before I left and planned to load up the other info first chance since I ran out of time before I left. First time I started to work on the newsletter, I brought out the flashdrive--nothing, nada, fried, dead. Never, ever had that happen with a flashdrive. What a nightmare, had to set up a whole new format for the 12 page newsletter and then, of course, had to do hours of research and input work to re-establish my contacts file so I could send the newsletter out. Never again. Now I have the contacts, bookmarks, etc., online so I can reach them from wherever from anyone's computer. Just a thought--especially since it is free.

RetiredHappy, so glad your mishap with the laptop ended up well. Could have happened to anyone. I have small dogs that like to jump up in my lap so a glass of wine or even coffee spill could happen at any time. It will be interesting to see if you end up using the laptop or notebook more often. Small is nice!! But the laptop has more power and space.

Hi from Sacto airport. :). Thanks for replies and scary stories too.
I'm thinking to change to Chrome as my browser. Looks like it saves all
bookmarks online. Need some time to try it out. DD and I have been
using google docs saved in the 'cloud'. Love it. Posting on my iPhone
so will sign off.
