Secured storage not secure...

Postby jemek » Tue Jun 22, 2010 1:42 pm

Well first it was the broken windows in the fall.
Now all the batteries have been stolen out of the trailers. The HOA still has not called us with the case #. Not that it makes a big hooey of a difference..I doubt they will ever catch who is doing it.

We are done keeping it here. While we love the fact that it is so close to home..I can not continue to afford to keep it there with the reoccurring damage and theft.

The RV place where we go for repairs recommended a True secure facility. The manger lives onsite. It is secure gate the is coded and can only be opened from 6am to 10 pm. They have a camera, dump station, water station and even have electric for an additional 15/month. The cost is 160.00 month. That is way more then what we pay now...we pay $500/yr as members of the HOA..I think non members are more.

We are thinking of two things..here...During April/may to Sept we use the 160/month one. Then we put out the word to see if we could find some one with room, that would allow us to store it at their home during the winter.

The other option we are looking into, but not sure we would get it done this year...is the rules in the HOA state that we can store RV/Boats in garage. car port, or enclosed area. So we are going to inquire about putting an enclosed area. I have heard from someone they were denied that...I am not sure HOW...it can be denied if the rule allow for it. I guess we will deal with that when the time comes, I have a call into them and hope to find out soon.

We said if we have to bring it back here, even for a short time, we would pull the propane tanks and the batteries...would it be okay to just place them inside the trailer.
vs hauling them home.

6 more years and we can sell this house and I will never plan to live in an HOA again.

Sorry to hear about the theft problems. I know it is very frustrating.

Oh, that's such a shame. Sorry. I like the storage place whereI keep my MH. It has all the security stuff you mentioned and also electric so I can leave the MH plugged in, water in one corner of the lot for washing your rig etc., and a new dump station which I used last week! I have a 30 ft space and pay $75 a mon.

Kris, sorry to hear about the theft. If you keep the TT where you are and put the batteries and propane inside the TT, what are the chances of the thieves going inside next time? After all there are microwaves, TV's, Fridges, etc. all to be stolen. It doesn't take much to break into a RV. I wouldn't think it would be safe until the thieves are caught. There have also been break ins in the security facilities as well. After you replace the items, I would keep them at home, while parking the TT. I would also go after the HOA and make them make the storage area more secure. JMO. Linda

We brought the propane tanks home, they need to be filled for the trip this weekend.
We place the batteries inside the trailer.

DH wanted to put a note on the trailer..." Just steal the entire thing and stop nickel and dimed to death"

DS on the other hand was trying to figure out how we could set booby traps that would spray non removable ink or air soft pellets at them.

For now we have no choice but to keep it where it is...it is going to take more time, being that we will have to remove everything.
We are going to work on fixing the one latch this weekend. It is frozen so we can't lock one of the sides storage units. I told DH we need to get that fixed, as it is a matter of time until they figure that they could access the inside of the trailer through that compartment.

I am not sure what the HOA is going to do..they finally rtn my call, but I was not home so all I got was the case ##. I might just stop in there with the receipt and ask them about theft coverage. I do not have a the rental agreement, as it was signed at the maintenance dept and they did not have a copier. The signs outside...state they are not responsible for damage or fire. (It says nothing about theft).

Check your rv policy, also - mine covers theft. Would have to see what my deductible is - but I'm covered for everything.

Stinks that it's happened. I had a storage locker for my "stuff" - and it got broken into twice. Got all the cd's I didn't have with me - hundreds - and that hurt the most. But, it's life - unfortunately. And the storage place wasn't responsible for any of it - sadly. I didn't claim any of that on my insurance - because I didn't take out coverage on the storage locker. Oh well .... if it had been in the rig and it was at a storage facility, it would have been covered.

With the tt - I wouldn't bring all that stuff home, but would make sure I had cable locks on everything if people are stealing.

Actually I am glad we did not lock the battery boxes. The rig 2 over from ours had the padlock's on their battery boxes and the thieves cut the wires and took the boxes.
I was down there stowing items for our trip and some people came in..they bought a new trailer. So I told them about what happened. They had not been contacted yet, their old trailer they were trading in, had it;s batteries stolen. He said it would have been nice to be contacted. I told him that was one of my issues, that this time they are not calling and letting people know. Could you imagine heading down there after work on a Friday to hook up and head out and see you have no batteries.

We put it all inside the trailer. That is about all we can do.
