Santa Fe/Taos/Albq

Postby cat » Fri May 14, 2010 10:00 pm

In July will be camping in CO with my son and his family then will go down into NM as I head home. Interesting things to see in Santa Fe/Taos/Albq? don't know if I'll need 2 days in each town? I know I'll get my fix of Mexican food while in NM.
thanks

Oh yeah Cat, you'll need 2 or 3 days in Santa Fe and at least 2 days in Taos and you might be able to see what you want to see in Albuquerque in 2 days. But Taos and Santa Fe will be calling your name for years to come! I can never get enough of them. There's a little neighborhood restaurant in Albuquerque that serves the best steak fingers smothered in green chile...so good. Served with beans, rice and sopapillas. It's on Central Ave on the SW side of town. If you're staying at either of the 2 rv parks on the west side of town it's really close to them. Just don't tell me if you go there, I'll be to jealous!!

Come on down to Silver City NM to see the Gila Cliff Dwellings and the Cat walk. Remember, you get your Flamingo wine glass if you visit me.

Right Karen, the Gila Cliff Dwellings are one of the few that you can actually walk around. It's fascinating to see them. Plus you get your very own Flamingo wine glass! What a deal!

I'm able to do crazy one days in all those towns. I can't say the same for the things to see on the way to and from them - all the wonderful places that I have to stop. The only thing I'd want to do in Albuquerque would be the old town area and the petroglyphs - but I'd skip those petroglyphs to go back to the really good site on one of the road trips to. NM has SO much to see and do all around - and much of it isn't in the cities. A day walking the old area of Santa Fe would be plenty of time - for me. But there are other things to see - and if you like to wander the stores - you'll need more time.

And Karen is right - Gila is wonderful - as are so many of the places to see in NM - I spent a month touring NM April 2009 with Sparkle - and we still didn't see it all. And both of us had been there before.

YIKES!!! It looks like I'll have to go back to NM as a destination and not a passing through to get home. I'm not into seeing a lot of museums (1 or 2 is enough) or shopping. Is there really a lot of differences between Taos and Santa Fe in what to see?

Beth, did you go to museums or more scenery type of places?

Sharon, was the steak fingers on the food channel's Diners, Drive-ins and Dives? Guy Fieri has gone to Santa Fe quite a few times and I hope to follow in his footsteps to some. YUM YUM

thanks everyone

I only go to museums that are different - like if they'll have something really unique to the area, etc. Not into hitting museums that much. I was very interested in walking around the old parts of Santa Fe - but could ignore the stores. Just see the buildings, etc. And the church is a must in Santa Fe. Taos is different, yes - it's the more artsy community. I could skip it - but others find it their favorite place. And if you've never been, you should go through once.

Yes, NM is very culturally rich - I love all that part - the national parks, the petroglyph sites, etc. And if you are going to Albuquerque, there is the National Petroglyph Monument there - so if you're interested, you can see some petroglyphs. But there's another area in NM that is just so rich with petroglyphs, that I was spoiled by that location.

Enjoy the time you have - there's always another trip :)
